I've searched for this answer in this forum but haven't found it yet so here goes:

I've filled out a draft of the FA SSS form but haven't paid for it or sent it in yet. Is there somewhere on the form where they estimate how much aid you may qualify for or does that happen once you pay for it and submit it?

A day o so after you submit and pay for the report, you will get a summary statement that will list at the bottom what you “Estimated Family Contribution” or EFC is.

Probably the trickiest part of the form is the line that asks how much you can contribute. You have to fill this out before seeing what SSS determines you can contribute. I think schools look closely at that. If you say you can pay X, they will likely expect you to, regardless of what the EFC turns out to be. I pay three times what the EFC was for my daughter because that’s what I said I could do. I’m okay with that.

But remember, schools vary greatly on how they use all this information.
