If you DO have a Facebook: Do you think it's a distraction? Do you think you could've done better in school if you didn't have one? What do you think are the benefits of having one? Do they outweigh the cons?

If you do NOT have a Facebook: Have you ever been in a situation where you wished you REALLY had a FB for a certain reason? Do you think you do better in school than the ones who do have a Facebook? What are your alternatives for communication?

I don’t have an FB. I have way better grades than anyone in my grade (perfect 4.0 UW and 4.5 W GPA). My alternatives are texting, emailing, and talking. There have been situations and I’m working that out with my parents now (conditions are 30 mins on school days and no more than 2 logins or 3 hours on a non-school day)

Well, FB does tend to make me procrastinate a bit. However, I still have a 4.0 UW & 4.78 W GPA and am the top of my class. I guess I could have more free time without a Facebook, but doing better in school without one? Nope.

Benefits? Helping friends with homework, getting help with homework, asking teachers questions, keeping up with events, etc… Well, since the only con would be causing me to procrastinate, the benefits do outweigh the cons by a landslide.

It is a secondary cause of my procrastination (two Bs in AP eng Lang last yr, also caused by depression). The pros outweigh the cons though. Friends put up vocab lists, you can recruit for your club and publicize your club, you can grab support for your ECs, you can spread word about fundraisers and what not, and you can ask friends for assignments and even video chat soon to group study. Basically, it’s a great educational and personal tool if used correctly!

There are a lot more pros but I can’t think of them now :)

i have one. the benefits are that you can ask other ppl about homework and collaborate on projects and group stuff. if i didnt have one, id probably be procrastinating on something else.

If i want to talk to someone/ask help on homework i either text them or ask someone through text to go on facebook and message that person for me :P

It’s a distraction, for sure. Not a bad one, though.

Not to brag, but I doubt I could do much better in school than I already do. I probably could have spent more time with my EC’s and sleeping without FB, though.

No benefit that I can really articulate in words, but I think FB is ultimately a good thing.

It’s not so much Facebook but the Internet in general. If I had some sort of school mode on Firefox that prevented me from visiting any place distracting, I would be in much better shape.

My Facebook actually helps me be a little more social, albeit it’s a distraction.

I too, have a 4.0 uw, so I couldn’t do better in school with or without Facebook.

The benefits are few, other than potentially being able to socialize with people in a setting where you otherwise wouldn’t. Even liking a status or having a status liked makes it feel like you’re connected with your peer group. I mean, it hasn’t changed my life or anything, but it’s a useful means of communication.

The cons are more wide-ranging. First, it’s a time-waster. This is obvious. It also makes you feel like a loser when all your friends are out doing things (for example, when you see pictures of a party) and you feel left out. Also, there are some annoying people who post annoying stuff all the time.

There’s one guy that a kinda know who posts like eight statuses a day. Sometimes you just wanna give him a virtual e-punch to the face. The worst part is when you realize there are people who think that about YOU. I limit myself to about one status update per week at most, but I have plenty of “friends” who I don’t really want to see my statuses. Indeed, I cannot take seriously those people who have 1500 friends and try to pass off that they are truly friends with that many people. Finally, don’t even get me started on farmville and all that crap…

Do you think it’s a distraction? - Not if I don’t make it one. If I have to type a report, I turn off my internet. If I’m doing written work, my laptop is gone. And if I have to use the Internet, I log off Facebook so that it takes far more time to check than just a quick pop over.
Do you think you could’ve done better in school if you didn’t have one? - Marginally. The grades I got were mostly because of other things going on in life and not Facebook. Sure, you could argue a percentage point or two, but nothing grade changing.
What do you think are the benefits of having one? - Easy chatting with friends, easier to plan events, party invites, the social scene on a website
Do they outweigh the cons? - I think so coming from a non-addict and responsible user. I maybe check it once a day.

Distraction? Eh, sometimes. Mostly when I’m sitting bored at home. There are loads of constructive activities I could be doing, including several hobbies, but sometimes FB gets in the way.
Better in school? Nooo, it isn’t that big of a problem.
Benefits? It’s a huge tool for my social life. Note the distinction- it helps facilitate my social life; FB in and of itself is not my social life. You have to draw the line, or obsession starts in.
