I was the step parent of a child who is going to college. She needs to have her FAFSA renewed for this year. Her mother and I were divorced on 02/06/2006. Do I still need to provide my income information?

The info you would be providing would be 2005 not 2006. I'd say you are probably compelled to but I also presume you have an atty who could advise you which I am not licensed to do. Did you provide income, were you separated in 2005? Lots of other questions.

My parents are divorced and I live with my mother who is remarried. Must I report my stepfathers financial information on my FAFSA?
A. Your step-parent is treated in the same manner as a biological parent. If your step-parent is married to your biological parent on the date the FAFSA is completed, the step-parents financial information must be included on the form. There are no exceptions; if this information is not provided, you will not be considered for federal student financial aid.
Q. Who can I call for help
with answering FAFSA questions?
A. You can call Education Assistance Corporation (EAC) at 1-800-874-9033 and a member of the EAC FAS Team can help you with FAFSA questions; or you may call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID with questions about your FAFSA or federal student financial aid in general.

who normally files the FAFSA. If her mother is the custodial parent, then she should file the FAFSA. You are suppose to state your status as of the day you file. I believe that if she has filed after your divorce, then she would just be using her income. Are you obligated to pay for college as per your divorce degree?

I'm sorry about the divorce. It sucks. What happened?

I am not obligated to support her financially since she is/was my stepchild. However, in the past, I was the one filing and signing the fafsa. Because of her age, she was not even considered part of the divorce. Her mother was always had full custody of her. And I am a bit confused, because the form that state to let them know marital status of her parents as of the time that the form is to be submitted hence since we were about to do this I did not know how to proceed at this point.

I have no custody of this child though and neither one of us has remarried, but we (and I mean we mother/child/self) still live in the same house but completely separate lifes.

By the way, I just got off the phone with the FAFSA people (1-800-433-3243). They have indicated that only the mother's income would have to be reported for I was only the stepparent.
Thank you all for your input.

You're the champ if you have no obligation and you are still filing for this kid............hats off to you. Lots of folks when the obligation to participate ends their efforts end.
