My parents make a little over $100000 but debt has become a problem and they have recently filed for bankruptcy. I did not qualify for the pell grant, but if I were to talk to the aid office at my school what would I have to tell them to try and convince them to give me some type of grant?

You can try, but they won’t make any adjustments based on the fact they filed bankruptcy. Being able to manage their money (or not) won’t get you any sympathy with any FA Office. Now if there are other things going on, like mom or dad is now a dislocated worker (laid off from their job against their will), then that is a different story all together. Usually, though, even unemployment (which is still AGI normally) is too much (for folks who earn 100,000 a year… won’t be low enough to get you qualified for the Pell grant.

Debt is not something that can usually be considered as a special circumstance. The exception is when the debt is because of something like high medical expenses. You can try talking to your FA department but it is very unlikely you will qualify for grant aid with a $100k income. Certainly not any federal grant aid.
