Hey guys, Im kinda in trouble right now due to my unusual circumstances in applying for FAFSA. I’ve been living in california for more than 3 years but my family just migrated to U.S about a year ago. My father is still in Pakistan who sends us some money from there. Since my parents just migrated, they haven’t filed their taxes yet (even though they were supposed to since they had the green card for a while). however, they will file 2015 taxes in april. long story short, i do not know how to go about the questions about the tax returns. and yeah my mom doesn’t work. we also get some support from state (food stamps) and that is all. Any suggestions will be welcomed ! thank you
If you have a green card you can file a fafsa now with as accurate info as possible and correct it when your parents do their 2014 taxes. People who want financial aid don’t wait to due taxes. They do them as early as possible and check the deadlines for each school you apply to.
Your parents will file their 2014 taxes (not 2015)…but they need to do it LONG before April if you expect to have a financial, aid package when you decide where to go to college by May 1.
You need to check ALL of your colleges for the deadlines for the fafsa, and the Profile, if required. Don’t miss those deadlines.
I would suggest you complete the FAFSA now using the best possible estimates based on your parents’ end of year pay stubs (realizing this may be more difficult for your dad…he should estimate as best as possible). Then they must complete their 2014 tax return as soon as possible after February 1…amend the FAFSA to reflect the actual 2014 numbers, change your status to “taxes completed” and resubmit.
Check each college to see what they require for financial aid consideration…and the deadlines.
