new immigrants, income tax questions

I Came to the USA with my family three months ago . we all have green cards and SSN's.
I want to apply for the financial aid, so I tried to fill a FASFA form but they asked me about our income tax
because we are new here we didn't have any income this three months. and we will fill our income tax with zero income this year.
how should I fill the FASFA with zero income, also if they select me for verification how can I prove the zero income
sorry for my bad English
Thank You

OP, are you applying for admission in Spring 2015 or Fall 2015?

If you are applying for admission fall 2015, your FAFSA cannot be submitted until January 1, 2015.

But when you DO complete it, you will have to list all 2014 income your parents earned in their old country.

I am a full time student now, and I want to apply for the FASFA to help me in my next tuition . we got our green cards three months ago. we should fill tax on any income after getting the green cards , and we didn’t have any income after getting them. sorry for my bad English
and Thank You very much

If you are filling out a current 2014-2015 FAFSA, you are required to put ALL income your parents earned in 2013.

So…if they had any income in your former country in 2013, you MUST include that on your 2014-2015 FAFSA form.

thank you . but when I arrived here the immigration officer told us that we should fill tax for any income after arriveing to the USA . and till now we don’t have any income

Also contact your school’s financial aid office.

The immigration folks were talking about taxes.

For financial aid, you MUST list your 2013 income on the 2014-2015 FAFSA form. And this includes all income earned in another country during 2013.

How will you and your family survive living in the US with zero income? Immigration has strict immigrant standards such that your family had to prove that you wouldn’t use or burden the country with requests for welfare or services unless you had a different hardship visa.

aunt bea,

The OP wrote that they have no US income yet, not that they haven’t a cent to their names and no roof over their heads. I know plenty of green card holders (adult children of citizens, refugees, lottery winners, etc.) who lived on savings or with extended family while job-hunting and taking English classes.

How have you been supporting yourselves? Do you have a citizen sponsor?

did your family earn any money in their home country?

Did your family bring savings to this country?

For you to have been given green cards means that your family was able to demonstrate that you wouldn’t be a burden on this country…either by showing funds or having a sponsor.

HappyMom: OP says he’s applying to colleges with zero income because his recently arrived family hasn’t earned any income in the states. So he’s destitute now and received SSN’s and green cards from immigration with no resources. Immigration wouldn’t have admitted the family without an income base, unless the family is in a refugee status.

If you want to start taking college courses as soon as possible, that likely means you will begin with the second semester of the Fall 2014-2015 school year. That means filing the 2014 FAFSA, which is available. That form requires you and your parents to list income in 2013 and assets as of the date the form is filed. It does not matter whether the income is US or from another country. It does not matter whether you are required to file a tax form or not. Also that form does not ask for 2014 income at all. 2014 income gets listed on the 2015 FAFSA which is released 1/1/2015 and aid that you get from that info is for the Fall 2015-2016 school. Colleges may differ on how financial aid is given for summer terms, but fall and spring semesters are consistent.

If your family has very little or no income, you will likely be asked how living expenses were met. In most any case, you will be asked to verify your information, and each school has it’s own way of doing so. For instance, if your family has not filed tax returns, a Non filers statement is often required.

If you and your family are in refugee status, speak with the resettlement coordinators who helped you when you got here. Someone in that office knows how to fill out the FAFSA when the student is in your situation.

Agree with CP, it doesn’t matter where your family made the income. Those amounts need to be listed.

for FAFSA, you have to list your total income for 2014…NOT JUST your US income. ALL income.

And you have to include savings.

If you have a sponsor, I don’t know if that income gets included somewhere or not.
