What do I do?
FAFSA does NOT ask for your W2. It asks for information from your w-2 IF you work and have a w-2.
So…if you have NO income (are you the student) for 2015, then you would put $0 in that field.
You will need to get a non-filers statement from the IRS, and send that to your college. But before you DO that, contact the college and make sure they want this done.
ETA…make sure your parent info is in the parent section…and yours is in the student section.
If you are completing a 2017-2018 fafsa, you will need 2015 tax return information for those who DID work.
FAFSA says this:
For questions 36–45, if the answer is zero or the question does not apply to you, enter 0. Report whole dollar amounts with no cents.
Question 39 is where the student reports earnings from working, if there are any. The FAFSA instructions for question 39 says that these earnings may be on a W-2 form.
The instructions are important. Read them all before you make your first attempt to complete FAFSA.
Ok thanks guys because I went to fafsa at my college and the lady told me to fill out a wage statement because I didn’t have a w2. And I don’t know what that is. I did already fill out my non filer statement but I was confused about this
You went to fafsa at your college? What does THAT mean? The fafsa is a financial aid application form. It’s not an office at your college.
If you’ve completed a non-filers statement…then get the wage statement from the college too…and put $0 on it…if that really was your income in 2015.
Are you the student?
They have a fafsa office of some sort in my college. I just went back there and asked about the wage statement, they told me to get it from the IRS, now what paperwork should I bring to the IRS to get my parents tax transcript,Non filer statement , and wage statement? Sorry I’m new to this whole financial aid thing and filling out this paperwork is hard so I won’t ask more questions if it bothers you guys
It’s OK to ask questions. My suggestion…sit down and think of all the things you need to have…and any questions related. It can be complicated.
Your parents have to request the tax transcript. You can’t get that for them…it’s NOT yours.
Are you saying your parents also had no income…and didn’t file taxes? If so, your school is also going to want to know how,you pay your day to day expenses. So be prepared to document that if asked.
