We just filed our tax return and we made corrections to our fafsa. We received our new EFC, got a DRN number, and a confirmation number.

We could not use the IRS Data retrieval tool yet, because it is too soon since we just filed our taxes. This is also new to me. Is this something that we must now use after the FAFSA is processed? If we don't use it, do we now have to send in a hard copy of our tax return to the college?

It used to be that one would need to do this only if audited (last year we were audited and needed to send in tax returns and W-2 forms). Is it now mandatory for every fafsa filer to use this tool or to send in returns, or are we done? Does the fafsa still use an * to indicate an audit, and if so, where would that show up on the confirmation page?

Thanks.

I had to amend our return and change our fafsa and didn’t use the retrieval tool because you can’t with that. I contacted the school and they said to send (after a few weeks to let the IRS process it) a free IRS transcript from their site. It’s free if they send it to you and then you can copy it to send to the college.
I would just let them know and ask them how they want you to update. We also had to use the Profile and I just sent copies of our returns to them and the notice of the amendment.
I might be wrong, but I think when they ask for verification, (we were asked all 4 years with my son) they do it later, we usually got a notice in the early summer, but after just finishing all the paperwork for my twins, I might be fuzzy on that.

Debruns, thanks. To clear up any confusion for other cc posters, the word that I meant to use was verification rather than audit, but to me it is the same thing.

Deb, do you know if there is still the * on the confirmation page to indicate that the verification is required? Do all schools verify everyone’s tax return now that they have the retrieval tool?

Does the comment on the confirmation page about indicating that we filed out taxes, and it appears that we were able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool mean that we must to go back into the fafsa and use it (we cannot do this for 2 weeks), or need to send in the returns? In other words, does this mean that we are being verified again? It says that once our fafsa is processed, we can use the tool to transfer our tax information. I don’t see an * on the confirmation page. Is this symbol still being used to let FA offices know we are to be verified by them?

NEM, I’m not sure. I didn’t see it on mine but that doesn’t mean you wont be verified later. I have to correct a fafsa tonight and will see if I see anything.
I would ask your school and if you have too, just go back in a couple of weeks and use it. I can’t because amended returns are treated differently.
Sometimes things that seem to make things easier, don’t.
No one understands in my family, most having just fafsa schools, what it’s like to do the many page Profile and then put everything together for the IDOC…there has to be an easier way with some private schools.

Deb, there is an * somewhere on the confirmation page according to a poster who is being verified this year. I just found this out from my other thread.
