FAFSA deadline for student applying for spring term

A friend of mine, a young woman in her late teens, is hoping to apply to college for the spring term 2012. The application deadline is November 1, and I believe the financial aid application has to be in 10/15.

She and her mom asked me to help with the application process.

I just checked the FAFSA site for her and the deadline for the FAFSA for the 2011-12 school year was June 30.

Does this mean that a person who decides to try for admission for spring term, who hasn't done a FAFSA in the winter/spring 2011, cannot apply for financial aid at all?

I'm thinking there must be a way to deal with this, and hoping for some suggestions.

I'll also suggest that they call the school....

No problem, the FAFSA deadline for the 2011-2012 school year is June 30th 2012.

She just needs to meet the school deadline.

She really does need to check the school’s deadline. The FAFSA for the 2011-2012 school year can be filed as late as June 30, 2012…but if this student wants financial aid consideration for the spring term…that would be FAR too late. Do whatever deadline is on the school website.

If she is applying to more than one school…check EACH school as the deadlines will very likely be different.

Another thought (not what you are asking but…) if she is in need of significant aid, she might want to wait and apply for the fall term. Some types of awards are limited (SEOG, Federal Work Study, Perkins Loans, for example) and those funds will likely not be available to a student applying for spring term admission.

Thanks all. I found my glasses and saw that it was 2012!

She does need significant aid, and I will pass that info on. I suspected as much.

If she could do a little more for spring, would her aid for fall then be at the same level as if she had applied for fall, even if it is a second semester? Hope that is clear…
