FAFSA didn't pay my housing bills

I go to UCR right now.
I applied for FAFSA and everything was complete but I keep getting emails saying that my housing fees are unpaid and failure to pay it by Jan.30 will result in problems with housing contract and will take legal actions.

I’ve already been billed late housing fee twice and I honestly don’t know why this is happening.
I emailed the financial aid office and my counselor but they aren’t open until monday and I want to fix this as soon as possible but I don’t know what the problem is.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

@Jeongmin123

FAFSA does NOT give you money. It’s a financial aid application form.

What financial aid did you receive from UCR? Was it enough to pay for your tuition, fees, room and board?

Did you get the Calgrant? Did you get additional aid to support room and board costs?

What WAS your financial aid package?

If the aid package was not sufficient to cover room and board…you owe the college money.

FAFSA does not give you FA. The school, state government, and possibly national government give you FA based on the FAFSA.

Is there a web portal where you can check FA status?

Does the school’s FA pay housing directly, or does it pay you so that you can pay housing yourself?

@thumper1 Yes I did get Cal grant. I got enough to pay for my tuition, boarding and everything.
I don’t know what’s happening…

@ucbalumnus The school’s FA pays housing directly.
I didn’t have this problem last quarter so I don’t know why this is happening to me…

@Gumbymom

What aid would this student need to have to cover his tuition, fees, room and board?

@Jeongmin123 so you are saying you financial aid package from UCR was a full ride? Everything covered?

Yes everything was covered for me and I didn’t have this problem last quarter or any time during my time at UCR this is the first time so I’m really confused…

Check the web portal, if any. Or otherwise find out what you did get awarded or if there is anything missing.

Call the FA office as soon as you can if there is no other way to figure this out.

I would suggest that calling the financial aid office at your school will get you better results than an anonymous online forum of strangers.

Can you list your FA package you received from UCR? Are you a Freshman? Are you on academic probation? Did you meet SAP?

@Gumbymom does being on academic probation prevent you from getting FA package?

@RichInPitt I was going to but they don’t open until monday and it’s a friday night so I needed some answers elsewhere

It certainly can. Aid will often be withheld if the student isn’t “doing their job” and getting passing grades. Financial aid is “other people’s money” so they naturally don’t keep giving it to students who are wasting it.

What year are you? Are you a freshman? What is your current GPA?

Not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress CAN affect awarding of aid.

If you received a merit award, you need to meet the GPA provisions to keep that award.

Are you ON academic probation?

UCR evaluates SAP at the end of spring term, so failure to meet SAP is most likely not the issue if you received aid for fall.

Unfortunately, you are going to have to wait until the office opens again to find out what is going on.

Did you receive a merit scholarship…with GPA renewal terms? Have you met those terms?
