FAFSA EFC changed by FSU

I checked my fafsa and it said a correction had been made. My efc went from 0 to 700 something like that. I checked my student aid report and my household number had been changed from 5 to 3.

I originally put 5 because my grandmother and a cousin lives with us. They are both dependent on my mom since my grandmother is out of work most of the time and my cousin is not allowed to work since he is working on his citizenship.

I asked my mom and she said she did not put them on her tax return. I guess that's why it was changed. Is there anyway, I can get my efc down because there is no way my mom can give me that?

Also will that increased efc affect me in the care program for summer? Someone said the care program is free when you have an efc of 0.

So, first of all, you can call FSU and they may make the corrections back to 5 with an explanation. They’ve done similar things in the past to our EFC but mostly they are things like counting scholarships as income and then upping the EFC because we had more income…

Second, when my daughter started in CARE (2011) the rule of thumb was that if you were eligible for even $1 of PELL grant money then CARE Summer Bridge Program is covered 100% even your incidentals, etc. Mr. Nyahuma is the CARE specific financial aid counselor and will be able to tell you with just one phone call if this is still the case. I would bet that it is.

Good luck!

Good luck trying to explain things on the FAFSA to FSU’s Financial Aid department. The department here loves to do anything to “fix” your FAFSA- including at times some things that are very shady.
And then when you question them on it, you’ll get “the FAFSA’s just a guideline from the federal government that you fill out, and then the school verifies that it’s accurate” meaning, quite bluntly, that at least in FSU’s eyes, what they edit your FAFSA to be is the final word.

Good luck getting them to fix it, especially if your mom didn’t claim them on her taxes. Trust me, you’re facing an uphill losing battle that you make you frustrated beyond your wit’s end. Been there, done that, and it gets old, really fricking quick.

Good luck. You’re going to need it. You have my sympathy.

To RoseAnn:

This is definitely an issue that you need to be speaking to the financial aid office about. You can ask on the internet and get 10 different answers from people who are not nor have ever been financial aid counselors. The people at the financial aid office know the federal guidelines about your issue and know what they are doing. Talk to them, you wont find much help on the internet.

At any rate, what you have described will not affect your CARE status, just the amount of Pell you are eligible for.

Nearly complete bull. Most of the people in the Financial Aid office don’t know what’s going on in regards to when things are going to happen (as evidenced multiple times where they tell different people different dates), much less what the federal regulations are on something.
I can pretty much guarantee that the Financial Aid office changed their FAFSA because the tax forms associated with the FAFSA were different. On their FAFSA they had one number, while on their taxes, there was a different number. That’s pretty much going to be the end of it, and you’ll be pretty dang lucky to actually get an actual reason or response from someone in the financial aid office.

As someone that has been in RoseAnn’s position before, I was giving them a heads up on what to expect. You don’t have to work in a Financial Aid office to tell someone how your experience with damn near their exact problem went.

I’ve noticed that your entire post history is from financial aid threads. You also magically didn’t post for nearly a year, between April 3 last year and March 29 this year. Hmm…
