FAFSA for 15 schools?

My son has 15 schools on his list (6 states + 9 privates). For FAFSA, I know we can only list 10 schools and once it’s been processed can later go back to delete some and add the remaining schools.

Questions:
Is there an order of priority for which 10 schools to submit first? Favorite schools? Earliest deadline? State schools?

Send the ones where aid is limited (the ones that don’t offer to meet full need) first- so that would be, I would think, most of the publics and some privates. If you have schools that promise to meet full need according to a formula that caps loans, or has a guarenteed scholarship, or anything of that sort, it’s not as important that they are sent first.

Not any longer, they used to show the other schools your order but not now. With filing so early, it doesn’t matter. I would put my state schools first.

^No.

The order doesn’t matter in the broad sense.

If you are low income, and hope to get aid like SEOG, federal work study, or any other limited funding federal, aid…submit first to the schools that don’t meet full need…where you really want to be the early bird.

If that’s not the case, it’s only about three days time for,the FAFSA to process. Just submit the first 10, then wait until they process…delete, and submit the rest.

Hold on. Didn’t some state universities have some requirement that they be listed first in order? I seem to remember some requirement for such schools. Or-did the new FAFSA rules eliminate this requirement as well?

Also, don’t some schools have earlier deadlines than others? Wouldn’t it make sense to put those first, wait a week or two, then do the others?

There were some states where the state wanted their schools to be listed first. But now, the schools will not get a list at all. They won’t know if you have even submitted the FAFSA to other schools.

@sybbie719 says that some agencies will still see all,the schools…but how, would, that be if those groups aren’t receiving the FAFSA?

Hoping @kelsmom can clarify.

The state agency that gives aid in your home state will see the schools that you have listed if you are applying for state aid. It won’t matter to them because state aid is an entitlement for those who are eligible to receive it.

For example if you are eligible to receive NYS TAP,you will receive it as long as you attend a school in NYS.

Thank you, everyone! This has been helpful.

I couldn’t get our current 529 balance - I locked myself out of the online account because I couldn’t remember the password. Is it possible for me to submit the FAFSA today and update a few days later with a current balance? They are not open until Monday so I can’t access it, and the paper statement is not current.

Disregard - I was able to get in.

Sorry for hijacking this thread but to add more schools to the FAFSA you have to wait until the current one is processed then delete it and make a new one for the additional schools? I have 12 schools that need it and we submitted it for 10 schools yesterday. Just want a clarification before we do anything else.

No, I think you enter the assets only one time. You cannot change/update them later.

For >10 schools wait for the FAFSA to be processed (you get your SAR) then delete some schools and add new ones.

UC asks to be listed first to help with your Cal Grant determination

@BrownParent - do you have to list each UC on FAFSA?

It looks like you do this year, as shown in the links.

I’m concerned because I just deleted our first 10 schools to add 2 more. One is Harvard. When on their site to get their ID#, I saw this: “The FAFSA will only let you have 10 schools listed at one time. If you are applying to more than 10 schools, you may want to call around to see if they have already received your FAFSA and you can remove their FAFSA code. Since we at Harvard don’t download FAFSAs until students are admitted, it’s not a good idea to remove Harvard’s FAFSA code.” !!!

We’re in the same situation. I just completed the FAFSA and then added the extra schools (deleting some in the process) as soon as I saw the first one was processed the next day). I plan to follow-up with all schools before Feb 1 to make sure they have received our FAFSA. If any school has not received our FAFSA by that time, in your example it sounds like Harvard would not,I will make sure that school is on the last group submitted. If not, I will just submit it again removing some schools that I know received it.
