My son will be graduating in may and going to grad school next fall. He will still be our dependent. My daughter will still be in college. On the FAFSA form where they ask how many in college, do I count my son and enter 2 or 1 for just my daughter? Does grad school count as college?

On the FAFSA, yes, you can list your son as a college student as he is seeking a degree. The FAFSA (unless it has changed) does not specifically ask undergrad/grad…just degree seeking).

BUT and this is a HUGE BUT. You need to contact each of your daughter’s schools to see if THEY will count your grad school son in the count when they compute your financial need. We did this with our daughter’s colleges and it was about 50/50. Some schools counted her grad school brother and others did NOT.

The thing is…you WILL be required to provide documentation of your son’s college status to the colleges. If they do NOT allow grad school kids to be counted, they will recalculate your aid. Better to ask now…and know.

Thank you for the info.
