FAFSA For Merit-based Scholarships?

I'm applying for merit-based scholarships but not need-based aid.
Do I still need to complete the FAFSA?

I've emailed one school (Furman) and they said no, but has anyone heard differently from other schools?

I really don't want to have to do all the paperwork, etc. if I don't have to ;)

No. FAFSA is an application for need-based aid.

Oops-- I stand corrected as Sueinphilly points out (somewhere). Some colleges do indeed require the FAFSA for merit aid.

Boston University requires CSS profile and FAFSA for merit only scholarships

Some states require the FAFSA in order to apply for the state lottery scholarships, like Tennessee and Georgia

Thanks... anyone else know anything?

Shifted...the best thing to do is contact the schools you need this info about. They will tell you what their requirements are. Policies vary WILDLY. As mentioned Boston University requires the FAFSA and Profile for ALL aid including merit aid (except for a few very select scholarships). Just read the websites or call financial aid. They will tell you. The other thing you get by completing the FAFSA is a Stafford Loan (if you don't have need, it would be unsubsidized).

Is this going to be your freshmen year? If so you should fill out the FAFSA even if you won't be receiving need based aid. If you don't fill it out your first year, you may not be eligible in subsequent years and your family's finances could change. Just fill it out to be on the safe side.
