I completed the FAFSA, I am the parent of the student and then realized I had a banking account under my name which is really my mothers money, do I need to go back and change the banking balances question and include this account?

My next question is we recieved a financial package back from the school my son is hoping to attend and we still will be responsible for a good chunk, two of the items included on the financial package are Fed. Unsub. Stafford Loan and Fed. Sub.Loan. We received an email that we havn't applied for those with a lender. Once I do that are those easy to qualify for and what about the rest of the money when do we have to come up with it, by fall? Should we start applying for student loans? We are not even sure if we need to have this done already or does the school give a period of time? HELP!

School will have a time that they will be working on $. and when you have to have the fall tuition paid for by. Many work on $ in June and want tuition paid by Aug 1st.
Just call the financial aid office tomorrow and they will help you…

the federal stafford subsidized and unsubsidized ARE the student loans.
You may also see something about PLUS loans. Those are federally backed loans for parents. Some schools will put the amount they aren’t giving you in scholarships/grants or other FEDERAL aid as a PLUS loan on a financial award letter. you don’t have to take that loan if you are planning on paying cash or have other financing

ALL students can get a stafford loan, there is no cosigner.

The ONLY other Federal loan is a perkins loan and not all schools/students get offered this.

ANY other types of loans to pay for college are PRIVATE student loans, not Federal student loans

so if on the financial package it states a Fed. Stafford Sub. and a Fed. Stafford Unsub. my son is the on one who has to apply with the lender not us the parents?

Also if the letter shows the eligibility for Fall and Spring is that considered a years worth of tuition?

yes, the stafford loan will be in your son’s name.

if your school is on a 2 semester system, then yes, the FA award should list the COA (tuition/room/board, etc) and all FA (loans/grants/scholarships, work study) for 2 semesters

Yes, Stafford loans are for your son only. Fall and Spring is considered one year.

When I file my income tax, reporting child support recieved is optional. On line 47C in the worksheet it is actually asking to report this. I know some questions are optional or not. Is this one optional?

Child support received is NOT optional on the FAFSA. The reason it is asked for on the worksheet is because it must be reported.
