I posted this question originally under a thread called Tuition. I appreciate the time people took to answer. I am still somwhat confused so forgive me for repeating the question.

If my son applies for financial aid as soon as possible in January 09 and we do our part by completing all required paperwork and meet all deadlines, will we have to pay his fall tuition up front?

If you received financial aide is the money usually available by the time tuition is due for the fall semester?

I am a single parent and he is relying entirely on grants, scholarships and loans in order to go to school. If I took out a parent plus loan how hard are they to get?

What is the credit criteria for these loans? I have a very old bankruptcy
that still shows up but have re-established good credit since then. What are the chances of getting one of these loans?

Hi I just went through this with my son. This is what we experienced. We applied for financial aid at Umd. I like you am a single parent. We applied early and they came back with an award. We didnt pay anything up front. The grants scholarships and loans were dispersed at different times. He took sub stafford loan and that actually dispersed the 26th of august. That was the last thing we were waiting on. Half of all of his awards are dispersed for Fall semseter. Half in Spring. I like you filed bankruptcy 3 years ago. I was approved for a Plus loan in the amount of 3500 but chose to pay with Marylands payment plan. Hope this helps. I am no expert but this was our experience . Good luck

The schools my DD attended did/do not disperse until the second week of classes. However, the bill shows payment is pending as of the due date since all the paperwork was completed well beforehand. Checks for the difference come a couple of weeks later.
