Hi! I live with my mother (my parents are divorced). In 2010 she made $0 income, did not receive ANY benefits (unemployment, disability, etc). She was living solely off of her savings and child support. I worked a part-time job and made around $10,000. Does anyone know my chances of getting aid, if any, and would it would be that I receive?

Thanks!

The aid you might get would depend on the school. As far as federal aid you could get a $5.5K Pell grant and $5.5K in subsidized loans which would start accruing interest after you graduate. Private schools may consider your father’s income as well.

Not $5500 sub … $3500 sub & $2000 unsub.

My advice is to make sure you apply to at least one school you KNOW you can afford … add up tuition & fees, then subtract the Pell grant ($5550) and the loans ($5500) and any guaranteed scholarships the college might have (gpa/ACT/SAT). Can you pay the rest (or is it all covered by this aid?)? Then pick a couple schools you think you might be able to afford if you get a decent aid package … once you get your award letters, you can decide if it will work for you. I work at a state U that is affordable for a 0 EFC student who lives at home … that student would get more than enough in grants & loans to pay for school. However, if that same student were to live on campus, there would not be enough student aid (grants, student loans) in the award package to cover all costs.
