I see where to list our assets, but not where to list college indebtedness we have already incurred. Is there a line for the balance on a PLUS type loan? Thanks.

not as far as I can tell
There is a place on tax forms that shows how much you are paying in interest- & when you send those forms to the school with your verified info- they will sure see it- but as far as I can tell FAFSA doesn't identify what debt you have - only income

That kind of information is not provided on FASFA. If your indebtedness is an issue, you can send information to the college's financial aid office to identify the issue and let them know about the situation. They may or may not take it into account, but it is worth the try.

Well, I don't mean my indebtedness is an issue. We have no debts aside from mortgage....except for college loans from the university, but they are issued by a different office, not financial aid. Somehow it seems as though financial aid ought to know we are making those payments...

This information is not on the FAFSA. The only information re: college "indebtedness" refers to the number of students who will be enrolled in college and what year they will be in college for the year of the FAFSA that you are completing. The reality is that the FAFSA form does not consider whether you have spent your income or taken out loans to pay for your child's college expenses. In fact...there is no place to indicate if one of your kiddos has a free ride. You simply put the number of students. If your university requires the Profile, you will be listing your debts as well as your home equity. Some college specific finaid forms ask for detailed explanations of your expenses (we did that for one private school).

Your debts are not taken into consideration for FAFSA, and even for Profile they are not usually a factor except for mortgages and home credit lines to the extent it offsets your home equity.
