My husband's income fluctuates each year. No year is the same. So..we can't file the fafsa until we have our tax appt. at the end of January. Is this waiting period for the correct tax numbers going to hurt my daughter's chances when it comes to the fafsa? I have been online trying to find out info re: our situation. No luck! So, I am turning to CC. Any input would be very well appreciated.

You can complete the FAFSA using the best estimates you can muster up…and then amend the FAFSA when your taxes are completed ASAP after Feb 1.

Or you can just wait IF the school deadlines are early Feb.

The most important thing to do is look at the school deadlines. If any of them are before you get your taxes done, you really MUST do an estimated one.

Also be aware that some forms of need based aid have limited funding per school. Perkins Loans, Federal Work Study and SEOG (for example) have limited amounts of funds per school and are awarded on a first come/first served basis. The estimated FAFSA done now will get your child in the queue for these, if you have financial need.

Thanks thumper1. I will look into the schools. She has already applied to all of her schools. Maybe I will call fin aid off of one school. She was accepted and received a generous merit aid package. I didn’t know that they only have so much money per school. Our tax appt is 1-25. Thanks for all your info.

That is for certain need based monies.

If, for example, you are Pell Grant eligible, you will get that no matter when you apply.

Check the deadlines and get it done as soon as you can.

Thanks so very much. I think I will be contacting the school and finding out.
