My mom is a single mother and doesn’t file taxes, but my brother claims me as a dependent and he isn’t my legal guardian, and FAFSA apps it asks for my parent/guardian income which would be 0.00?? He is the one who is providing for our family but I’m not sure if I should put his I formation or not…
Does he live in your household? Or does he have his own place and send you money?
Lives in our household
Your tax filing status is not the determining factor for the FAFSA. Even if your brother claims you as a dependent, your parent is the one you put on your FAFSA…unless you have been adopted by someone else.
So…in your case, it sounds like you live with your mom. Therefore, her income and assets would be on the FAFSA form. Since she doesn’t file taxes, she will need to complete a non-filers statement.
If you really have $0 in income, it is very likely you will be selected for verification as the schools will rightfully want to know how you are paying your day to day living expenses. So be prepared to provide the necessary documentation.
You do NOT put your brother’s income and assets on your FAFSA.
