Alright, so the financial aid deadline for several of the colleges that I am applying to is February first. I cannot complete the FAFSA form as my father has not received his W2 form yet. Could schools be flexible with this date in the event that I cannot complete it on time.

You can complete the FAFSA with estimates of your family income. You can use the information on the last paystubs of 2009, or if your income/assets situation has not changed much in the last year, you can use your 2008 tax info.

After completing your 2009 taxes you can go back into FAFSA and make updates/corrections.

Don’t miss deadlines! Earlier is better than later. If you file an estimated FAFSA before the deadlines, you can file your corrected one after them… that’s okay.

Many, many people will be using their 2008 numbers to fill out the FAFSA and meet the Feb 1 deadline. It is more important to meet the deadline than have the numbers correct on Feb 1.

You DO need to go back and amend the FAFSA with the correct numbers just as soon as your dad has figured his taxes. Encourage him to do this ASAP (not to wait until April 15).

Our first year we amended the FAFSA eigtht times. It was no big deal. Do plan to photocopy your dad’s 2009 taxes (and yours too, if you need to file) because it is likely that each school will want a copy.

Tell your dad that you may need his help to fill out the FAFSA. There’s several bits that he will know that you may not. Also, make sure you go to the FAFSA website now and get signed up for two PIN’s (one for you, one for parent). Don’t wait to work on this stuff. You don’t want to get to Jan 30 and find that the server is down . . .
