Fafsa help!!!

My parents are not U.S. Citizens but i am, can i still file for FAFSA even tho they dont file taxes. I had a job last year, it didnt pay much but i will still file my taxes.

You should definitely fill out the FAFSA. Some schools won’t even give merit aid without it.

You should still complete the fafsa with your parents personal information and click the drop-down for their tax status as “Will Not File”. If the schools require verification of any information they will contact you as part of the process.

Well I began to fill out the FAFSA but when it came to whether or not i would be providing parental information i put no because they aren’t here legally so…yea I haven’t finished it yet but i saved it at the part where it still gives me a choice to provide parental information.

I believe you still need to PROVIDE your parent information…translated into US dollars. If they earned income where they live, this still needs to be reported as income.

I’m not well versed on this type of situation but I also believe there is some way to indicate taxes they may have paid to the country in which they reside.

BUT (someone will correct me if I’m wrong)…you still need to report your parents’ incomes and assets regardless of where they reside. You cannot say …no “because they are not here”. Their location doesn’t matter.

Yes you have to report parent income and assets. You can’t just omit them. The FAFSA will not file. There is no option to not include parent info (unless you are considered independent for FAFSA because, for instance, being age 24 or older)

People not here legally are still required to file tax returns if they have sufficient income to be required to file. No tax return - no federal aid. If they live in another country then you must still report their income in that country.

Do either of your parents have a SSN? If not you may not be able to file online, but will have to file a paper FAFSA.

Neither of them have ssn. Whats the difference between an online fafsa and a paper fafsa?

The online FAFSA can be submitted online. The paper one must be mailed in.

You fill the online FAFSA out online. But it requires one of your parents to have a PIN to sign it. if they do not have a SSN they cannot get a PIN. You either have to do the whole FAFSA on paper. Or it looks like you can file it online and indicate that you will send a signature page.
