FAFSA if only trying to get unsubsidized loan?

My son will be a senior his year, and we just want him to get the max loan amount. We will not get any subsidized loans or grants/other aid. Are there any shortcuts if that’s all he is looking for?

Thanks in advance.

Shortcuts in what way? You need to complete the whole FAFSA and submit it to his college. Link to the IRS data retrieval tool.

Thanks Thumper. I’m just dreading filling out all the asset info. Was hoping it didn’t really matter if we are just looking for loan.

Check with your school. If students have parents who refuse to complete the FAFSA can still get the unsubbed loans, so just be ‘one of those parents.’

Um no. It’s not that simple if you won’t complete the FAFSA. You just can’t decide not to do it.

@kelsmom I seem to recall that the parents need to sign that they are not supporting the student or declaring them as a dependent. Is that my imagination?

Thanks. I will send a note to financial aid office.

The financial aid office will likely tell you to complete the FAFSA.

It’s not that big a deal. We can do the entire form. I was just hoping, somewhat unrealistically, that there might be a shortcut (kind of like the 1040ez or whatever).

There is no “short form” FAFSA.

In our FAFSA it just asked if we had over $30 something thousand in assets. After we could honestly say “no” to that we didn’t have to provide any more details. At least for us parents. The asset protection amount depends on parent age. Why don’t you start the FAFSA and see what it says?

It’s on my chores for the weekend.
Thanks to all.

@mommdc

You are describing the “skip logic” that is built into the FAFSA. When you answer certain questions a certain way, the form skips questions you don’t need to complete.
