I'm an immigrant, and I have a registration number, however it is not WITH ME and I DON'T HAVE KNOW IT.

My parents have it, but they're in the States, right now I'm abroad.

The thing is, I need to put in that number to even get noticed for Federal Aid.

I could put my FI VISA but that will kill me out of 95% of aid, (aka, it'll only allow me to work in the school for financial reasons)

also, on my applications to schools I applied as an IMMIGRANT, and since schools get the FAFSA report, if I put my VISA, they will be like "Ok, didn't he say he's an immigrant?"
which could cause confusion and at the worst case scenario, maybe even have my application revoked.

If the immigrant visa you are talking about is a green card (which would make you eligible for federal aid) then you must find out that number to file with your FAFSA or you may not be considered for aid. If you are a green card holder you should have had your green card with you to leave the US and **must **have it with you to reenter the US.

To be eligible for any federal aid you must be a citizen or eligible non citizen. If you are not an eligible citizen you can not be considered for federal aid at all. You would probably have to apply for aid as an international student which would mean you would only be eligible for institutional aid.

I could not really tell from your post exactly what your status is as far as being a resident/legal alien/non resident. You need to determine this. It is vitally important because this affects how you apply for aid (FAFSA and possibly CSS, or international applicant). Applying the right way is important. If you are not sure which application is appropriate for you then contact your schools and ask them.

Yes. I am surprised you can still use your student visa if you have your green card. Mmm. I am not sure you can even submit FAFSA without the green card number.

With a green card, you can work anywhere you want to. You aren’t restricted to jobs on campus.

But you had better find out whether you can actually enter the country with that student visa now that you have a green card. It is my understanding that once you get a green card, all your old visas are canceled. Get hold of you family’s immigration lawyer for advice about this.

According to the FAFSA website, here is a list of things they say that you should have available before you begin the FAFSA:

So even if he has his green card, he will still need his A-# and his SS# order to fill out the fafsa.

Don’t be so quick. Unless you have a full ride merit scholarship, that is not based on need, you may still need to file the FAFSA especially if you need Federal or state aid.

What school have you been admitted to?

Are they covering the cost of everything?

FAFSA will specifically ask for it when he clicks that he is a permanent resident. If he does not put it in, I don’t think they will even let him submit the FAFSA.

I don’t even know how you will be able to re-enter the US without your green card. Immigration law is very specific about it. Over 18, it is a misdimi. not to carry it with you at all time.

To sybbie719:
The Green card has an Alien Registration number, it’s pretty much a SSN

I have been admited to UCR so far, aiming for UCLA and UCB.
If I get admitted to UCLA I will have a 16,000-20,000 dollar scholarship from the UCLA Conference Center Alumni (back where I lived)

Other than that I have 4,000 in scholarship money thus far. My college price ranges from 11,000-24,000 dollars a year.

If I don’t apply to FAFSA, I’m still able to work on campus and all even without FAFSA right?

If I don’t have my number then I won’t be allowed to apply for FAFSA, I can put in my VISA number but it will pretty much keep me out of everything.

I got my green card last summer… however, I needed to go to Abroad (to Baja, it’s not that far from the States, 1 hour at most) really soon and I didn’t receive it on time for me to take with me.

I still have the Visas and I was able to cross to the States just fine last year, however, I think this year (2009) regulations have changed about that so I’m gonna have to see what is up.

The alien registration number is not a “pretty much a SSN” at all. You will need a SSN in addition to the alien registration number. (I have had a green card for 20 years - I had to apply for a SS card when I moved to the US).

You will not be able to work anywhere, on or off campus, without a SSN. Even with a SSN many on campus jobs are work study jobs. WS is part of need based financial aid, and you cannot get a WS job if you do not have WS as part of a financial aid package.

You also cannot complete an online FAFSA without a SSN.

Surely there is some way of getting hold of your parents so they can tell you your A# from your green card?

Haiku…, I hate to bring it to you, but a green card is NOT like a SSN #. Upon receiving your green card, you must applied for a SSN#. Green card proves you are a Lawful Permanent Resident, SSN# is essential to pay taxes, received money like FAFSA, and to get a driver license. These 2 forms of ID are a package, and you must have the 2 to comply with immigration and the IRS.

As for re-entrying the US, you should always follow-up on Immigration web site, because rules change from years to years.

one other thing. The UC finaid deadline of March 2 is a hard deadline. If you miss filing fafsa by March 2, you chances of university-sponsored grants will be greatly diminished, and could be nil in today’s economic climate.

But I don’t even think FAFSA ON-LINE would let you by-pass the SNN#. Not to mention the question about US citizen or Permanent Resident. As soon as you click on Permanent Resident, the line to enter your number appears. If you don’t filled out that line, I think you are stuck on that page.

I really hate to be the party pooper, but your parent have nothing to do with it. As a Permanent Resident and first time applicant for a SSN#, you must apply in person at one of their office in th US. Everyone must apply in person, even a 6 years old, eventhough the parent or gardian will be signing the form because the child is underaged.

You also cannot get a PIN without a SS#. OP have you and a parent applied for your PINs yet? To electronically ‘sign’ FAFSA online you and one parent must have a FAFSA PIN number. You need to apply for those ASAP.
