FAFSA: Independent under the "homeless" question.

Here is my story:

I am in my first year of college and received "independent" status prior to graduating high school because I got kicked out and had nowhere stable to live. My high school counselor found out about my situation and I guess did the proper documentation for me to receive the Pell Grant and subsidized loans. I have been living on my own ever since college started, but I am looking at the current FAFSA application and it seems as though I will not be considered "independent" anymore.

My mom lives in Texas and I am going to school in Ohio, does FAFSA really expect me to get ahold of my mom (when I haven't spoken to her in ages) and bug her for her tax information? Is it possible that I will lose independant status?

This also makes me wonder: If you are automatically "independent" if you are married, what happens if you get married and then get divorced before turning 24? Does FAFSA say "Oh, wait, now you are dependent again..."

I am just wondering if it is likely I will be able to get a dependency override...

Talk with your financial aid office about this. Your override should be a permanent one.
