I hope this is not a silly question, however I would like to begin working on the FAFSA form yet would like to be able to work on it in draft form and return to it until we are prepared to submit it. Is this possible to do?

Yep. There is a save function on the web form. No problem returning to it later.

Just remember, Pianomom12, that you cannot even begin the FAFSA for the 2010-11 academic year until after January 1st. The one that is available online now is for this current year, 2009-10.

So if you are working on a FAFSA for yourself or your child who will enter college in the Fall of 2010, you can’t actually even get to the proper FAFSA at this point. If you’re applying for aid for this upcoming winter or spring term of the the 2009-10 academic year, than you can do that now.

I have heard you can enter figures into the FAFSA4caster, however, and those figures can be transferred to your 2010-11 FAFSA automatically after the 1st of January when the actual FAFSA becomes available. Don’t know that for sure, but I’ve heard people say so.

Thanks 'rentof2 for that “heads-up” as I did not know that the form would not be “live” until after January 1st. Given that so many parents have stated that it takes hours (if not weeks) to complete it, I thought I could spend the holiday week working on the FAFSA. I guess it will have to wait but I do appreciate your helpful insights on this.

Pianomom, you can complete your CSS Profile now if your child needs to use this form for aid. You can find the list of schools that use the profile on the Collegeboard’s website.

You can also apply for a pin number for yourself and for your child now. You will need this for the fafsa.

You can also check each school’s website to see if a school has their own additional FA forms to complete.
