Hi guys, so I have a question regarding a change of marital status on an already submitted fafsa. I recently got married, on July 1st. My wife submitted her fafsa some time before this. We wanted to change her marital status so that she can claim herself as independent, but the financial aid office has told her that they can't change it because it's illegal. But I'm reading online now that you can change your marital status for 2012-2013 year.

So, now I'm confused. The financial aid office seems to refuse any assistance, and frankly I don't believe them because I've had other dealings with them where they scream incompetence. Are they correct? Can my wife not update her marital status on an already submitted fafsa? But if they are incorrect, what do we do?

Thanks in advance,

I believe your marital status is as of the day you file your FAFSA. I could be wrong, but if you were not married when you filed your FAFSA that is the way it remains for the year of the fafsa which would be the 2012-2013 school year.

I’m sure someone will correct me if I am wrong!

Supposedly, there is a rule change, but I think the FA office has to agree to the change??? Hopefully Kelsmom will weigh in. this came up a few weeks ago with another student

Yeah, I I have read that the rules changed on July 1 of this year. But I called the FAFSA office and they said “no, you cannot change your marital status”. However, when I told them that I’ve heard the rules have changed they pause and say “oh, well they haven’t told us yet.”

I’ve found one university that seems to have a form for this specifically. It’s Bethel University and the form I found at http://www.bethel.edu/offices/financial-aid/forms/appeal-marital-status-1213.pdf

Is this legit? I’ll call them tomorrow I think…
