FAFSA No Income Independent Live With Parents

How do you fill out the FAFSA if you are independent, no income, and live with parents when it comes to the Student Financial Information part? Is it just 0 for everything?

Do you meet FAFSA’s requirements for independent?

Well I’m 25, so I qualify. I just don’t know what to put for the Student Financial Information part. I don’t have income and I live with my parents. Do I just put 0 for everything?

If you had no income in 2012, then you put $0 for income. It is highly likely you will be selected for verification so be prepared to explain how you pay your living expenses with NO income.

Yes, although you do have to put down as other income any money that is paid IN YOUR NAME by others. If you have insurance, credit cards, cell phone in your own name & your parents pay that bill, the amount they paid for the base year (2011 if you are completing a 2012-13 FAFSA) must be reported as other income. If everything is 0, though, that is what you report.

Thanks. They do pay my insurance and doctor bills, so I’ll put that down.

Don’t put down insurance or doctor bills if you are on their insurance … that is not technically in your name, because you are part of their policies. If you have auto insurance in your name only, and they pay it, you would report that. If you are on their policy, however, it is not actually in your name. If you have a car in your name & they help make the payments … or if you have a credit card in your name & they make the payments … those are the things you would report.
