FAFSA - Not mentioning Social Security benefits?

Does the FAFSA not require that I mention the Social Security benefits one of my parent's receives? I submitted it today and don't remember having to put down the amount for it.

It's weird because some schools require only the FAFSA which didn't have a place for the ss benefits, but some require the CSS profile which does have a place to put it down. Won't the financial package differ greatly because of this?

Untaxed SS income is not required by FAFSA.

Schools that use CSS generally use FAFSA for determining eligibility for federal aid, and CSS for determining eligibility for institutional aid.

^^^

Isn’t SS income often taxed? Isn’t SS income for a retired person taxed?

if so, where is it supposed to be listed on FAFSA? It sounds like the OP had no idea where to put it even if it is taxed.

The taxed part of SS would already be included the AGI. It is not reported separately.

Yes SS retirement income can be taxable. It depends on how much other income there is. It is a weird formula where if total income including 1/2 your SS exceeds a certain amount (I think it is $32,000 for a married couple) then a portion of SS income starts to become taxable, increasing as the income increases.

*The taxed part of SS would already be included the AGI. It is not reported separately. *

So, if there’s a taxed part of SS, then the person just adds that amount to whatever other AGI that the family has?

No. If it is taxed it is already included in the AGI from the tax return. You don’t add it for FAFSA or it will be counted twice.

Oh…yes…duh…LOL

oh awesome thanks everyone!

I’m not sure if any more people will be checking this thread out, but I had another question.

For the FAFSA, there’s a question that asks for my mom income, and my dad’s. My mom got paid a certain amount from work, and another amount from unemployment. Would their total be her income? I know their total is the adjusted gross income, but I wasn’t sure if you went and separated it into parents if the unemployment money counted as my mothers income.

ohh financial aid stuff is so confusing :P

Income for FAFSA is reported from line 7 on the 1040 (and business income, too, if any - line 12). Unemployment is included in AGI, but is not reported as income from work. If dad has only SS income, then he has no income from work. Basically, the income part is line 7 + line 12. If the only income on line 7 and/or line 12 is mom, dad has 0 for income from work. The rest of it is included in AGI. The income from work section is just providing information for the income protection allowance of the EFC formula.
