Fafsa NYU poly

Hello I just today sent in my Fafsa to NYU poly what's the chance that I'll get anything. I really need the aid. I already got a 10,000 dollar scholarship there but I need more

Wait, NYU Poly gave you a 10,000 scholarship already without any financial aid application submitted? If that is the case, and I was not aware that scholarships can be given out without the submission of the FAFSA, then maybe it is because NYU Poly has different policies with their scholarships awarded.

If you submit your FAFSA and the Expected Family Contribution is low, you may get extra money based on need. Now I do not know how generous or stingy NYU Poly is with FA, though I have read that NYU Poly has been more generous than NYU Central (Schools at Washington Sq.). Also, depending on your and your family income you may get some federal grant money (Pell grant), subsidized /unsubsidized loans, work study, and TAP grant money (the latter if you are a NYS resident). You have to be low income for both Pell and TAP grants.

There are quite a few unknowns about your situation and NYU Poly to say if you will get further aid in any form.

you literally said nothing of your situation. :stuck_out_tongue: if you want a generic answer: it depends on how much money your parents make, assets, etc.

My parents are divorced and my mom has no job. We don’t get a lot of child support. However we do have 6 figures in the bank but that money isn’t in my ( the students) name. I never had a job before.

xd,
The FAFSA asks for the parent’s assets (in this case, your mom). If she has assets in cash, that needs to be reported in the parent’s financial information section. THe FAFSA asks for parents’ total cash, savings and checking accounts. In particular, amounts over $54,000-55,000 (as I recall but this could have been for NYS TAP). The income portion will be advantageous for getting aid, but I am not sure what will happen when they calculate in the cash (which should have been reported).

Again, NYU does not guaranteed to cover all financial need. The income would have qualified you for UP TO $5000 in Federal Pell grant and $2000 or so NYS TAP money (if you are a NYS resident) depending on the EFC. However, the cash savings in the 6 figures complicates the situation for more FA.

Also, as I pointed above, I am not sure if NYU Poly is more generous with FA than NYU in general (I think Poly had been more generous prior to becoming part of NYU).

Also, I assume you missed the priority deadline for submitting the FAFSA to NYU Poly, unless the school has a different deadline from the 2/15/11 deadline for the other schools of NYU. That also may mean that there is now less NYU money since other people filing on time have gotten consideration first. Moreover, you got a scholarship already and I am not sure they will give more even with proven need. At least not for NYU (again not sure about NYU Poly’s policies in this regard).

Do let us know what happens. I hope you are able to get more money though I remain cautious regarding NYU’s largesse in this regard.

The “priority deadline” isn’t “the deadline.” Wait and see what the Financial Aid dept can do, and then if you feel the need to appeal, go for it. Tentatively though, sounds like your parents have a lot of money saved up, and they don’t want to give it to you, BUT they probably could. So if Financial Aid is like “o rly?” try talking to your parents and seeing what they can do about the pot of money they have stashed in the bank ?

Idk, you’re quite lucky, you know? I’m in a similarish situation in that my parents are divorced, my mom makes no money and sends no money, and my dad works his butt off to support two kids–the younger one starting college this fall. My mom lost 60k a few years ago trying to start a business, so we had to pay off that deficit too. As well as a very hefty divorce price. Not to mention I should totally report my dad’s lawyer to the Bar Assocation. I have like 2-3 jobs any given time of the year, and all the money I make goes towards rent or food or toiletries -_- and I payed my mom’s bills once. IN SUMMATION lmao sry for the rant, these things are therapeutic but: sounds like comparatively (at least)…you’re gonna be A-okay! At least there exists money that can be used for you  you say you’ve never had a job before; try getting one via work study.
