FAFSA - Parent willing to provide financial info but does not want other parent to see

Next year I will be submitting my info for my child’s FAFSA. I have no issue with my student seeing what I make, but do not want her mother (we are not married) to have access to that info. Any suggestions or info on this topic?

Are the three of you living together? If not, with whom does the child live? If there’s only one custodial parent, the other parent has no roll in completing FAFSA.

Do you all live together?

We do not live together. She lives with her mom. Sounds like I will not need to submit my info.

If your daughter resides greater than 50% of the time with her MOM…her mom is her custodial parent. Her mom’s info would go on the fafsa…not yours.

Just be alert that if she applies to colleges requiring the CSS Profile, some of those DO require the non-custodial parent form. However, that is completed by the non-custodial parent…and not at all shared with the student or custodial parent. HOWEVER…if the school uses non custodial parent Profile information…and your income is very high…and custodial parent income is very low…it won’t be hard for them to figure out that YOUR high income is the factor reducing need based aid at schools using the non-custodial parent form. They won’t have your exact numbers…but they can parse the info.

For your child’s sake, please get honest with yourself about how much you are truly ready, willing, and able to pay for college costs, and under what circumstances. When you know that figure, make certain that your child also knows and understands the parameters you will be working with. If you really can’t chip in much at all, or if you will pay more for a certain institution than for another, your child needs to know in time to plan their application list.
