FAFSA Question

Filling out the FASFA form for college entry Fall 2019. If my daughter gets into Berklee but without a good enough scholarship, one option is for her to go to our local community college for 24 credits then transfer to Berklee as a sophomore. Any idea if I need to list that local college on the FAFSA just in case?

If you want FA from that school (Pell grant, SEOG, loans) then yes, you do need to list it.

It opens today!

Thank you @twoinanddone
I actually just plugged away all morning and got the FAFSA done. Just waiting on my verification so that my FAFSA ID is approved, which apparently takes a few days. My daughter turned in the common ap (5 colleges) and 2 non-common ap applications so just a few more to go (9 total not including the local community college.) Does anyone know if colleges can see the other colleges you apply to when they get the FAFSA info? Just curious.

Not anymore. Other schools used to see all the schools you listed on FAFSA but now cannot.

Keep in mind that if your child goes to a CC first and then transfers, likely will get much less aid at that point.

When we went on the Berklee tour, they told us that if finances were an issue, students can take a year to get the 24 liberal arts credits at any college and they would honor whatever scholarship was given the previous year and allow the student to start as a Sophomore. It came straight from the admissions department so hopefully it was accurate.

@AmyIzzy

The cost to attend Berklee is upward of $66,000 a year…depending on off or on campus housing. Costs of rentals in Boston are high…and are for 12 months…so it’s not a bargain.

How much of a scholarship do you need for your daughter to attend?

I think your best bet is…wait and see if the scholarship offered will even come close to what your family needs for her to attend. Many times…that’s not the case…

Oh yes, @thumper1- you’re not kidding! Trust me, we are fully aware of the insane price tag. She understands that only a very generous scholarship (50% or higher) would allow this dream school to become a reality. We do know some very talented students who received more than 50% scholarships, but we also know award-winning student musicians who did not even get in! Voice (my daughter’s focus) is one of the most competitive areas at Berklee so we are going in with our eyes wide open. We are also lucky because she actually really loves her safety schools too and they have been recruiting her with teases of generous scholarships (and have reasonable price tags even if the merit money doesn’t come through.) Thanks for the warnings, though! I still can’t comprehend the cost of living ($20K for dorms??) but I guess you have to weigh the perks of living in a great music city like Boston.
