Current admin is opposed to a draft, anyway--

That is not all that they are opposed to. I mean volunteer army all the way........sign up and then worry about those benefits.

There's no need for a draft right now. The Republicans would be done if they instituted a draft at this point in time. International conditions are going to have to get much worse before there is a realistic chance of a draft.

And by that, I mean that the only way we'd see a draft was if we roared into an armed conflict with Iran, North Korea, or China.

China isn't an issue right now because they are hosting the 2008 Olympics. North Korea and Iran could get in some kind of conflict, but they won't instigate it. All they are looking for iis some reassurance that we won't instigate something with them.

Ok, gang. Help me out here....

When my son got his learner's permit in VA, he was told he had to allow the state to register him for the draft, so he said "okay fine".

Just before he turned 18, the state did forward his registration info to Selective Service. By the time he turned 18, by cracky, he was registered and received his Selective Service card.

When we filled out his FAFSA a few days ago (will file), we checked NO because it said to check YES only if he was over 18 and NOT registered...and we got a SAR within 2 days.

Are we okay then? Did we do it right??

You are a smarty..........sounds like you passed it just fine.

Praise be!

Sounds fine, the directions are pretty straight forward. The Fafsa help board told me the earliest they accept it is 17 and 3 months so we were too early for that too. Next time though, I can change it with our corrections. My nephew did it a month before his 18th birthday in December in college. (was also a young senior)

Aren't you exempt from a draft if you're in college anyway?

"Aren't you exempt from a draft if you're in college anyway?"

That exemption went away many years ago (1972, I think), before the draft itself went away.

Why only males????

That's the law-- a throwback to the days when wars had front lines, women didn't see combat, and so weren't eligible to be drafted. The lines are much more blurred now--

If a certain candidate gets elected President and keeps 140,000 troops in Iraq, there will be a draft. Most of those 140,000 are on their third and fourth tours and there are not enough volunteers to sustain this level of forces. This is what I am telling my children.

Okay, I need help on this issue. I will be graduating in Spring 2010. The problem is that my family does not have abundant source of money so I will need all the help for tuition. I know that when you sign up for FAFSA that you agree to be on the selective service. Now I am not a US Citizen, I recently became a Permanent Resident of the UnitedStates. I have no problem with signing for the selective service. Am I elgible to sign up for fafsa or is there something making me not able to join.

I’m sending applications soon so I need help as soon as possible

If you are a permanent resident you can file FAFSA and you must sign up for selective service.

Good news to hear. They won’t use me thoguh. My vision is to poor some thing like -14 or -16 deopter or however u spell it
