Not only do you have to register for SS for financial aid, but it is also required if you want to work for the government at any time, and will be asked in other situations. Just do it.
Then you need to have registered for selective service to be eligible for federal financial aid.
Since you are a male over 18…you must register for the Selective service or you will NOT receive federally funded need based aid.
I’m not sure your FAFSA will even process if this requirement isn’t fulfilled.
The FAFSA will have a flag, and the aid office will not be allowed to disburse aid until they are sure the issue is resolved. For this student, they would need proof of SS registration if he doesn’t check the register-me box on FAFSA & has not previously registered. A female who didn’t answer the gender question will be asked for proof that she is legally considered female. A male who isn’t registered & is 26 or older has to provide proof he wasn’t required to register. For example, an immigrant who didn’t enter the country until he was 26 would provide proof of initial date of entry into the U.S.
Ok I didnt know that. I checked off register for selective service. I just got my SAR and i will be verified. I used irs drt tool and i called the helpline to ask why. They said they do not see any flags or items that are incorrect and that i was just chosen at random. They said i will not need a tax transcript because i used drt tool. So what else can they be verifying and what else can they request for me to use for verification?
Some schools verify EVERY application for FA. It may just mean they are looking at the FAFSA to make sure it makes sense. If you said you have no income and no assets but live in Beverly Hills? They want to know how. It may be a ligit reason like you live with a rich uncle. It may be they want to see W-2s to check the income reported. They can ask for bank account statements to see if you reported everything. Thousands of students are verified every year and most check out just fine.
Once more.
My older kid was selected for verification EVERY year for four years. This kid didn’t receive a nickel of need based aid. He only did the FAFSA to get a portion of the Direct Loan. This was before DRT, so the school just sent us a list of what they wanted to have. We compiled!
Just be patient. It might be NOTHING. It sounds like a random verification selection. The colleges will tell you what they want. But do keep a close eye on you student portal, email and spam folders. You don’t want to miss the notification from any college about verification requirements.
It’s excellent that you did this on the early side.
what if I go back into fafsa and see maybe I missed something. Maybe there is a chance I will get a corrected SAR with no flag, this way the school will look at my latest fafsa and I will not have to go through verification anymore. It just sounds like a big hassle. Or once you are chosen for verification, and even if you make a corrections and don’t get flagged you still must be verified…
Leave your FAFSA alone.
The schools might decide to ask for…nothing.
And it’s NOT a hassle. They don’t ask for things that are obscure!
oh? I thought they are obligated to ask for at least something.
@Brokee why are you so worried? What exactly do you think they will ask for? Why do you think t his will be a hassle. It won’t be.
I read some articles where it takes so long to get additional information that you miss out on aid since they might run out of $. I used DRT for goodness sakes, what else DO THEY NEED!!
Oh for heavens sake. JUST WAIT. Keep all the info you used when you completed your FAFSA…tax returns, w2 forms, bank balances as of date of filing.
The articles you are reading are probably about folks who waited too long, and/or didn’t have their stuff to send.
What “additional” information do you think you are going to need? Did a parent die (you might need a death certificate)? Did your parents divorce (you might need documentation to prove that)?
What are you worried you won’t be able to “get” in a timely fashion?
Really…keep an eye on your emails, and student portal and spam folders…and send the info ASAP after your receive the request.
Okay, thanks.
@kelsmom @twoinanddone @mommdc
Could you weigh in here? I don’t want to be the only one giving advice to this worried student.
I agree, just keep an eye on any emails or letters and send them what they request.
The good thing is you filed FAFSA early do there should be lots of time.
I think you need to just fill out your form by answering every question you are asked correctly and using the DRT. That is all you can do. (And check off “register me” for selective service.) Then you wait & see. IF you are selected for verification and/or asked for additional information by the school, read the instructions carefully & provide what is requested as soon as possible.
At this point, the most important thing is getting the initial FAFSA submitted, because that is the date schools will be looking at in the first-come-first-served aid world.
You need to relax. Complete the FAFSA. Then go be a young person and enjoy your life!
