FAFSA with no parent income?

Hi,

If my parent has no income would he have to file taxes to report on my FAFSA form (I will be filling out the 2017-2018 form in December) ?

No. If they don’t need to file by the tax laws, you just complete the FAFSA with the correct information (parents may have some income and still not need to file, but would need to report on FAFSA), and then be prepared to be verified. If verified, you’ll need any documentation they do have (could have interest statements, W2, records of income) and a statement of non-filer, which you get from the IRS.

You will automatically be flagged low income verification where you will have to show proof of how you are living everyday and your source for food clothing and shelter.

If your family has no income they will also need an IRS statement of no filing

Very helpful, thanks so much

Your college will require a non-filers statement if your parent does not file a tax return. Make sure you get that…and submit it in a timely fashion.
