My Parents Don't File Their Taxes

My parents don’t file their taxes, but they have lived in the United States for more than 15 years. I can’t get financial aid because I still don’t have the paperwork that they need. I heard that I can go to the IRS office and order a no tax slip that pretty much tell my schools that my parents refuse to pay taxes, but these are some of the expenses that they pay for. It’s a little too late to start filing taxes because of all of my school’s financial aid close on the 15th of March. What do I do?

You cannot get a statement about their non-filing status, but they can.

Do they have SSN? Are they supposed to file based on their income?

You can file a FAFSA and check that they did/do not file. It is very likely you’ll be chosen for verification and you may not be awarded any financial aid until they complete all steps needed, which might include filing taxes for the year needed (2016 for current filing).

Are your parents required to file US tax forms? Some international workers in some specific situations aren’t. Workers with low enough incomes aren’t required to file taxes. In either of those cases, your parents would need to complete a non-filers statement to file with the FAFSA.

If your parents should be filing income tax returns, and don’t have SSNs, they can file US income taxes with EINs.

If your parents were required to file a tax return…and didn’t…the non-filers statement isn’t going t9 do you any good.

The reasons for not filing are legally allowable reasons…not “we just didn’t file”.

So…why haven’t they filed their taxes? Did they just not do it? Or what? Do they have income? How much.

If they were required to file taxes and just chose not to do so…they have a tax filing issue they need to correct before you will see a nickel of federally funded need based aid, and maybe even school based institutional need based aid. Schools need to verify family income.

Financial aid comes from other people’s tax dollars. If your parents are supposed to file tax returns but they refuse to, I wouldn’t expect colleges to give you financial aid.

Can you clarify? Are your parents unemployed? Do they work for employers? Are they self-employed?

No college is going to give you aid just because your parents are supposed to file taxes, but don’t.

Why are you just dealing with now?? How did they think college would get paid for?

How much will they pay towards college?

I think the question is whether they were required to file and didn’t, or if they weren’t required to file at all. What you can do depends on that.

What does this mean? What expenses? Expenses have nothing to do,with taxes unless one is self employed…are the your parents self employed?

It sounds like you haven’t filed a FAFSA at all yet because you don’t have income information from 2016.

Did your parents have income in 2016? Are they permanent residents? How,do they pay their day to day living expenses?

This financial aid form was available on October 1. This problem filing it…isn’t news.

I have no idea where you applied to colleges…or how you thought the bills would be paid.

You should probably talk to your parents before filling anything that might open up a can of worms with the IRS or immigration if they are GC holders.

Why do your parents “refuse to pay” their taxes?
