FAFSA

FAFSA mentions that we should not include disability money, so does that mean that I should state that my financial income is only $25,000 instead of $40,000? I feel that I am misinterpreting the information and just wanted to make sure. Also, I am confused if I will receive lots of aid since 25 thousand dollars is a lot less than 40 thousand dollars? Thanks <3 :slight_smile:

I can’t answer the disability question with certain’y, but I believe untaxed disability is not included on the fafsa.

Re:more aid? That will depend on the policies of the colleges. The very vast majority of schools do NOT meet full financial need, so you could very well be paying a lot more than your Cost of Attendance minus your FAFSA EFC. It all depends on how generous the colleges are.

Aww that really does stink, but thank you for your help. I just do not want to get parent loans as my family can’t afford that, I really do not know what to do :frowning:

What you should do is pick colleges that will give you good aid instead of ones where aid isn’t widely available. But 25 will likely mean you get a full Pell Grant.

What are your grades and test scores? Are they high enough for you to qualify for good merit scholarships? If so apply to schools that guarantee generous merit scholarships.

When are you starting college? Are you going to a CC? Why are you just filling out FAFSA now?

Well, I am actually a senior but my brother is in college and he made a huge mistake with the FAFSA aid, and I do not want to do that as well. He put my mother’s disability money and he did not get very much aid at 40,000 dollars… so I was just curious and I was overlooking some sections of it and there all confusing and I feel as if college is just to hard to afford and although I have an okay gpa: 3.9 ( unweighted) and an sat score of 2100, I feel like I cannot pay for college and admissions are stressing me out. So sorry!

At Brown Parent, does the pell grant look at disability money. Thank you for your comment!

@Brownparent @mom2collegekids @KKmama

No, I believe that @thumper1 is right and untaxed disability is not included. If your brother made a mistake he can contact his financial aid office asap. Is he a freshman? Where does he go and how is that paid for?

Are you in CA? In LA, I am in LA county and maybe I can help you with some college and financial stuff for your search as time allows, you can PM me.

And of course the forum can help. Did you look at the list of colleges that give automatic aid for your stats? What is CR + M?

Your brother may need to simply correct his FAFSA if the disability should be excluded.

Your 3.9 GPA and 2100 SAT are quite nice stats.

Have you considered Questbridge and / or Gates Millenium scholarship applications, if applicable? (For Gates Millenium - look at the ethnicity requirements to see if you qualify).

What colleges are you applying to and what majors are you interested?

Yes, you would be qualified to apply to the Questbridge College Match. There are about 35 very strong/top colleges that will give you a pretty full aid package. There is a forum for questbridge here. The application is open now, it is has a lot of short essays where you get to explain yourself and your situation more than in the common application. If you are selected as a finalist is is also an ‘honor’ to list on your applications.

Here is the Questbridge forum on CC. Start your application now! It could change your life. The deadline to submit is September 28 but it is not something you can procrastinate about starting.

@santacru2323

Per the first paragraph of this link, private disability payments are listed for question 94i. Per the second paragraph social security benefits are not listed for 94i.

Ok - so is the $15k from Social Security Disability or a private source?

@santacru2323

Is your mom’s disability payments from the government or is it from an employer? Who is paying your mom that money?

If your brother truly made an error, it is not too late to correct that for this school year.

So sorry everyone, I did not have access to the internet, but wanted to thank everyone for their help and @Madison85 it is from a private source. :slight_smile:

In that case they have to be listed.

Does insurance count? This is very confusing…
