FAFSA's EFC figure

We will have two in college this fall 2008. Our older son is a full time student at a Major State University. He is considered "Independent" when filing the FAFSA because he is a veteran but is only 19 years old and lives at home when classes are not in session. He will file the 2008-09 FAFSA without our financial data. I submitted the FAFSA last night for our rising college freshman. We claim 5 dependents for tax purposes (Husband, self and 3 children). Our EFC figure is $ 26,081.

Does our EFC figure represent our ecpected contribution for BOTH college students or just the one rising freshman?

I also submitted the PROFILE last night which reflected our out of pocket expenses for the older son's 2007-08 fees. We do not file a PROFILE for the oldest son.

Any insight is welcomed.

If your older son is Independent for FAFSA then his EFC does not include any 'family' contribution from you. So technically you are not expected to contribute for him (yeah right).

The EFC for your rising freshman is what you are expected to contribute for him. If the older son was a dependent for FAFSA the 'family' portion of the EFC would be divided between them - half to older son half to freshman.

Gosh your son is young to be a veteran - best of luck to him.

p.s. I'm not stalking you.

Older son was at one of the Academies. He was only 17 when he left. It was not the right fit for him at that time. He is now in ROTC and doing well. He is still determined to serve our country as an officer. Someone has to lead our troops. I couldn't be prouder!

I don't know what you mean about .... stalking. Did you reply to one of my previous posts?

Since the PROFILE specificly asks how much we contributed to the older son's education costs in 2007-08 and how much we anticipate paying next year, can we request FAFSA to re evaluate our EFC?

When you fill out FAFSA, doesn't it ask how many are in college and how many children you have? I would say you have two in college (which you do). I don't think it narrows it down and asks how many dependent students you have in college. There are families out there with two kids in college, one on a full ride scholarship and they still put down two kids in college, even through they only pay for one.

Yes I had just answered one of your questions.

Also I had just read a post where someone was complaining that someone was stalking them on CC and as I find I quite often answer questions from the same people (somewhat naturally as I tend to check the financial aid threads the most because I got so much help as a newbie) it just crossed my mind how odd it would be that someone would think that.

I guess reading my remark without the context of what was going on in my brain at that moment it probably seemed odd - sorry!!
