If I got a 2 on all of my AP tests (7 tests in total) should I bother self-reporting any of them? Will this negatively affect my admission chances?
There’s no need to report the scores. You won’t receive any AP credit for them, so just leave them off.
I would not report, nor would I indicate that I had taken them. AOs might wonder about your scores, but better than knowing you failed them. Bummer, though.
They won’t wonder about the scores, IMO. Lots of kids take AP classes without ever taking the exams.
it may very well affect your chances, since colleges might wonder why a student who took 7AP classes did NOT report ANY AP tests scores.
I disagree. Not reporting a test or 2 is not a big deal. But I do think than an AO will wonder why there are no scores at all. It is not uncommon for an AO to contact the student and/or the GC for an explanation.But in this case, I don;t think the OP has a choice. The options are not report and have the AO assume the applicant failed the exam or report them, and the AO would know for sure.
I would definitely not report.
There were many students in my daughter’s HS that took AP courses but not the tests because of financial reasons.
I don’t think it will look very good to have so many APs and no scores. Leaving off one or two is not a big deal, but when you have that many AP classes, an AO is bound to notice. I don’t know if it will help, but you might try an SAT Subject Test or two to show mastery of the topics. AP tests are a very small part of the overall application, but high GPA and low test scores indicate grade inflation. Some strong subject test scores may help counter that impression.
Do you know what might have gone wrong? AP tests are difficult, but if you did reasonably well in class, its likely you would have done well in some of them.
Thanks all for the advice. Guess I won’t be reporting them.
@Groundwork2022 I have a 33 ACT, and I got As in all of my ap classes. I really did try on the ap exams, and i was honestly confused as to why i didn’t pass any. If it makes a difference, I am from a rural area and most of the aps I took were beginning to be offered the year I took them.
Did you actually take 7 AP classes or did you try to self study?
@Eeyore123 actually took.
You have a great ACT score. Congrats!
@chercheur thanks, I’m hoping my act score, gpa, and class rank will make up for poor ap tests.
That’s kind of amazing, @johnander123 - I was thinking you might be in a cruddy school district or something, and not being taught well - but the 33ACT kind of doesn’t track.
Congrats for the rest of your stats - they are great!
They won’t consider your AP tests for admission, so you are good to go! Best of luck!
If they were all new offerings in your school, it may be the case that the teaching was not really up to par. You might have learned the material that was covered pretty well, but not have covered enough to do well on the exam. Do you know how the rest of your classmates did on the exams? If nobody scored 3 or 4, it’s most likely the teacher, not you. Don’t report the scores, there are plenty of students who don’t take the exams, They are not intended for admissions purposes, they are for credit, if a college chooses to offer it.
You don’t know that. UCB (and UCLA) actually state that they consider AP (or IB) scores. What they or any other school does if nothing is reported is unknown. https://admissions.berkeley.edu/freshmen-requirements
@CTScoutmom some classes (like ap environmental, ap bio, and ap calculus) I know that almost nobody passed (ap environmental and bio we basically did absolutely nothing in class)
Others, like ap lang, I believe that about 30 to 40 percent of the class got a 3. Honestly, I could have done a lot better myself, and I dont want to blame my teachers for it. I’m not too worried, I think that my other stats can hopefully make AOs look over the AP scores.
Don’t worry about reporting them.
@johnander123
this may be a good time to review your college list, especially with regards to your “safety” schools.
It may not reflect well on your application to many reach/ match colleges that you reported no AP scores after taking 7 AP classes.
so have a talk with your GC , so you dont end up with 0 acceptances in April.
take a look at the # of posts that @skieurope and I both have.
We have both been here a while [ in my case- since 2004] , and both of us dont want to see you devastated because you got bad advice by newbies .
