I am a sophomore at a public 4 year University. With finals coming around the corner in less than a week, I am currently panicking for my Organic chemistry class. I got a pretty bad score on both of my midterms (...more like failed... I did worse on my second midterm...) and now have the final left to take. Currently I can see from the grades posted that I am on the lower class percentage. So now I'm worried that even if I did well on the final that I might not even be able to pass the class at all. I'm doing well in the lab portion of the class but just not the exams.

I'm thinking that I made a mistake in studying for the second midterm by trying to understand the concept (reading the book) rather than practicing the problems enough to do well a couple of days before the exams. And probably because I enjoyed the positive change this school year at college a little too much (my freshman year didn't go well since one of my parents passed away followed by many roommate issues at the dorm to the point that I felt reluctant to go back and sleep in my room. In addition to that, I was kicked out of my major and was discouraged by my friends to continue my chem major and should just take a humanities major, such as art, instead because I was good at it as a hobby).

Should I talk to my professor about it or is it pointless now? (the final is a few days from now and we don't have a "dead week" at my college) I feel like I would just be bothering him from helping out the other students who actually have questions... or he might think I didn't care enough about his class or lectures (I go to all his lectures). Ugh, this is so frustrating.

At this point, you have probably waited too long for going to the professor to make much of a difference. What do you expect him to be able to do at this point? If you were struggling in the class, you should have started going to office hours earlier and figured out the problems before also failing the second midterm. At this point in the class, there is not much left you can do besides study your hardest for the final, and perhaps see if you can find a study group. Do go to your professors if you have questions on the material or want help studying for the exam! Just don’t expect him to be able to solve your problem 99% of the way through the semester.

I agree with nano. Unfortunately the time for real, substantive action with regard to the professor was after failing the first midterm so that you could have gotten your act together for the 2nd one. I’m assuming it’s too late to withdraw from the class?

Unfortunately, you’re probably going to need to retake Organic Chem. This is doable if you pass it this time - I’m sure some students enter the major as sophomores - but pass it this time.

From your other posts it sounds like you go to UC Riverside. Something isn’t making sense here. How do you get kicked out of your major freshman year?

Why are you majoring in chem? What are your future plans? It doesn’t sound like chem is your strength.
You should look at the mistakes you made on the first midterm and see where you went wrong because nothing changed for the 2nd midterm. It doesn’t sound like you ever got a grasp of what the professor was looking for. Re-evaluate what you did and study the problems correctly.
