Failing a class sort of intentionally.

Hello people. I’m in sort of a tight situation where I don’t know if failing the class would be the best of my options. So fortunately I have seeked help with my mental instability that I’ve been having all this term, I’ve had a bad break up and my dog die on me this term. I’ve always been sort of a socially excluded person but this term was bad, I barely showed up to class and even raised concern with the dean of students because I was suicidal. Where I go to school we have tri-mesters so it was too late to play catch up and pick up my grades. I was fortunately fast enough to act on dropping a calculus class with refund. I however, was so behind in my computer science class, that I could only pick up from a terrible F (in the 30% range) to a D-. I decided to make this class pass no pass since my major requires that I get at least a B- to show satisfactory knowledge in order to proceed to the next class so I’d have to retake it even if I passed it. I’m a CS major and the material isn’t that hard but I played hot potato and got burned. I think that not passing this class would be the best option since I’m already not taking it for a grade, It will not affect my GPA if I fail, this is also the first class which I’ve made pass no pass. My GPA is at a good standing and I’m no where close to academic probation since I’m generally a decent student. Would you guys agree that just turning in a blank final would not be that bad of a thing to do? I learned from my patheic mistakes and it will never happen again. I will try very hard next term to recieve a B, If not an A. Thanks for reading…

How does it help you to fail if you don’t get a grade either way? Take the exam and do your best on it.

Seconded. At the very least taking the final will give you a better idea of exactly what to study for when you re-take the course. Or you may surprise yourself and end up doing well enough to pass. Either way I don’t see what the negative of putting a good effort into the final is.

Even if you’re taking it pass/fail (or credit/no credit, whatever your school calls it), the Fail will appear on your transcript. Better to show a “Pass” and a subsequent letter grade.

Every time you fail a class you are throwing money away. Throwing money away. In addition, letting yourself fail will not improve your self-esteem or mental health issues, and it might make things worse.

If the OP is a full-time student (not paying by the credit hour) and will have to retake the class anyway (major requirements usually need to be taken for a letter grade), I don’t see how it’s throwing money away to fail the class. At the same time, I don’t see a reason to turn in a blank final without even trying.

I guess the throwing money away is a matter of perspective. If you have to repeat classes and end up going to school and extra semester, school year or more then you are committing to extra costs that were unnecessary in the first place.
