I am an undergraduate who Is a transfer student. I took off fall semester because I had to pay the money I owed to my school money. The amount of time off I had was 8 months in total. I’m currently failing my spring semester at my new school. I need help it is week 5 and I feel hopeless at this point. I’m reaching out to my teachers advisors etc. it doesn’t seem like anything is working all they tell me is go to the tutoring center. Which I do attend. The courses I am struggling in are calculus, chemistry, and biology. I will take all the advice and tips I can get please and thank you!!!
How have you done in science and math in the past?
Calculus is very heavily dependent upon precalculus and trigonometry. Thus how you are doing in this class probably depends upon how you did in those previous classes.
The first thing that comes to mind is to drop one class and take a W, then concentrate and work very hard on the classes that you have left. You can make up a missing class over the summer. Also, the majority of university students in the US take more than 4 years to graduate in any case, so taking one less class at a time and just taking an extra semester or two is not unusual. I would be inclined to drop the most difficult class. Chemistry and Biology at the same time sound like a lot to me.
Having had 8 months off between schools should not hurt you. I took two years off between schools and was a much better student when I returned, and this is not unusual.
Those three classes are weedout at many colleges, ie, designed to fail a percentage of the students. They shouldn’t be taken together at first.
What exact grade are you getting in each?
If you drop one class and take the W do you still have 12 credits?
Struggling in calculus & chemistry is understandable. Your workload is too much. Listen to MYOS1634.
Chem and biology at the same time seems to much especially with labs for both. Did you have an advisor helping you with your schedule? Did they suggest you take these particular classes this semester?
If the OP is a STEM major then I can’t see why you guys are advising against taking two science courses and calculus in the same semester since it is not uncommon for Pre-med or STEM majors to do so because it will only get more demanding from this point on.
I don’t want to discourage the OP because I’m a student who has struggled in college since I started and am interested in STEM myself. I’m taking two math classes along with microeconomics this semester which is a tough schedule and maybe once this semester is over I can do better in the future since I will have adjusted to a demanding schedule.
Because they said they’re failing.
