Honestly if he asked me that question I would sign it quickly to get him out of my way. We all know the first amendment isn’t going anywhere with just a random petitioner in the streets. Some of the people even sounded like they were just humoring him because of how absurd his request is.
Agree with you, @arlunn. There are lots of social psych experiments on the art of group pressure (and “group” can be defined in different ways). Its likely many would sign just to be kind/helpful/ make the person happy and to be able to move on. Its possible several of the names on the signatures are fake anyway.
I find it ironic that it was a petition to repeal the First Amendment, which allows you the right to petition
Are you kidding? Have you ever actually watched the dynamics around a petition drive? Yes, many people ignore and walk past, but many others sign and continue on without really looking at it. You get both reactions (as well as careful consideration, occasionally)—why so many people here think everything must be precisely one or the other, I really don’t get.
:-@ … or maybe these kids really did just mess up!
Horowitz framed the petition “as a way to end microaggressions, and preserve safe spaces”. Call me crazy but I can definitely see a sizable number of students signing something like this. It has all of the right buzzwords…
“You shouldn’t be exposed to things you don’t want to hear,” Horowitz tells one student signing the petition, as she murmurs her agreement.
David Horowitz is a who engages in ing behavior as a profession, and anyone who seriously thinks this kind of stunt means anything should go take a nap.
The great Nick Flynn has spoken. Since what he writes is obviously truth, everyone should immediately accept what was written, and this discussion can immediately end.
Absolutely agree.
