One of the counselors from the academy called me on Friday to let me know I had been awarded this scholarship. I’m not sure which school to pick. I’m leaning more towards northwestern but I’m unsure of its quality and how well it gets candidates into the academy. And do people that receive this scholarship usually get accepted into the academy the following year?

Unless you really screw up, you will get in to the Academy with the FF scholarship.

My sponsor mom and a friend I graduated with both did NMMI FF.
My room mate last semester did Valley Forge.
My room mate next semester did Marion Military.
Another friend of mine here did Northwestern.

So, speaking only from their accounts: Valley Forge is a very bad pick. NMMI is good, but there's NOTHING to do out there. My friend from Marion (and another guy I met at orientation coming from there for 2011) said that it wasn't bad. Then, my friend from Northwestern said it was hard, but not bad. I know that Northwestern makes you memorize vocab (daily I think?) with tests. There is a mom on here of a northwestern FF cadet. So, northwestern is probably the most difficult, but will prepare you for knowledge for sure.

Based on what I've heard from friends, I think that Marion and Northwestern are the best picks. So, if you like Northwestern, then that's probably a good choice, all of them will get you here if you don't do anything illegal or grossly bad.

Marion's weather will be the closest to TX weather if your from the Southeast part of TX as well.

thanks for the info

Hi there.. I am the mom of another FF scholarship awardee. We chose NWP because it is only for 4 months. The second semester is at home at local college. Since D really only needs 1 higher SAT test score, we decided on NWP to concentrate getting that score rather than have prep and college classes, military mixed in. She will get enough mililtary at the academy. This way, she can concentrate on college classes second semester. We are in Pa and Valley Forge would have been logical because of location, but we didn't hear good things about it. I spoke to all the schools offered and NWP made the most sense for what we wanted.
I hope this helps..

S went to NWP - Fall 06 - to improve his SAT/ACT scores. Students take the SAT 3 times and ACT 1 or 2 times. He enjoyed his time there. Went to local college had no problems. Now, he is just waiting for June 28th. You will not be disappointed with NWP. Be prepared for a lot of academic work and learning how to study. Also, beware of the Bears..........

Rayg97 -- no direct experience here, but on my son's Academy visit this spring and in a parent presentation by the admissions folks (led by Col. Carpenter) the question of civilian prep schools came up. I recall they mentioned all the options and while they didn't come out and endorse one or another, they seemed to imply Northwestern was viewed highly because of its program. Maybe you should just call admissions, ask them the same question, and sound them out over the phone?

My son is also a Falcon Scholar. He will be attending Marion Military Institute for 07. We didn't have time to check each school out other than the internet but was able to visit Marion Military for open house. He decided on Marion because he doesn't have any ROTC experience but he does have a lot of Civil Air Patrol background. We were told by a Colonel at Marion that it would better prepare him physically, mentally and academically for what he is to face at the Academy. I think NWP just concentrates more on SAT's but I'm not sure. I guess it is mostly a personal preference. Nine months at Marion really isn't much longer than 4 months at NWP so I guess it won't hurt to go ahead and get into a routine.

My son did NWP and he has nothing but good to say about it. Yes, it was hard. They pushed him academically and physically. He came back with much higher ACT and SAT scores and in much better shape. He loved the teachers there even though they were tough, and he made wonderful friends there. The area is beautiful, too. Although they do have some students who go Navy or Army, most of their students go Air Force. And yes, there are bears.

What is the process for applying for the Falcon Foundation Scholarship? My son will be attending NMMI this fall and we just found out about this potential source of scholarshipm money. All the website says is to "send your request to..." and they list an address - I can't seem to find an online application, nor can I find anything that lists the required documentation that is required (i.e. HS transcripts, ACT/SAT scores, ASVAB, etc.).

From what I understand.. The USAFA awards the F/F scholarships based on the academy application. They only award 100. The academy then reserves 100 slots in next years class for the F/F scholars.
We didn't apply seperately. It was just awarded and you accepted.
