[] Essays: Very good-Common App Essay was very unique to myself (I share a name with a movie character so I humorously reflected on that). Why USC was thoughtful and my Annenberg Statement was very good as well–detailed different programs at USC that I would take advantage of and showed my passion for the school!
[] Teacher Recs: I have not read them, but I would assume, based on the result, that they were quite good
[] Counselor Rec: Same as above
[] EC highlights: Editor of Newspaper; Soccer Captain; Mock Trial Captain; Creator/anchor/producer of TV show on cable network; Creator/anchor of School TV Studio/Show; Creator of Internet Sports Radio Station to broadcast school sporting events; Internship at Local Paper; Organizer of 3 benefit concerts in my town; Member of a number of other clubs[/ul]

My EC’s are the best part of my application and I think that they helped get me the opportunity to interview! That is truly a testament to USC’s holistic application review. Fight On!

**Decision: Accepted **

Date applied: Late November

Date decision postmarked/received: January 23, 2013

Accepted at which school/major at USC: Viterbi, Computer Science (Games)

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT Total: 2320 M: 740, CR: 800, WR: 780,
[] ACT: 31
[] SAT Subject Tests: Math 2(780) & Physics(740)
[] GPA-UW/W: 3.75/4UW, 5.13-something/6 weighted
[] Rank: 28/596 at time of app [now 32/576]
[li]AP/IB classes: Eng Comp(5), WHist(5), HumGeo(5), Calc AB, CompSciA, Physics C, Govt, MacroEcon, Eng Lit [/li][/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Best essays I’ve written in my life in terms of capturing my personality rather than style/analysis/etc. Every essay I’ve written always feels like it’s missing something that makes it “me”. This was like I’d bottled up my essence and poured it all over a paper. Doubt I could do that again, lightning doesn’t really strike twice. Kind of quirky for the geek/nerd/neither Viterbi question. And I had some pretty unconventional answers for the quick takes.
[] Teacher Recs: Academic Decathlon Coach/English I and IV teacher (same guy, the APEng teach retired before my senior year) AND AP Computer Science teacher. AcaDec coach has known me all 4 years, has a pretty good idea of who I am. No idea what he wrote, but I know it was good.
[] Counselor Rec: She knows me well, worked with her to apply to summer programs junior year. Good as well.
[] EC highlights: Carnegie Mellon Pre-College Game Academy (2012), Academic Octathlon/Decathlon (awards at all levels up to State), Junior Classical League (2nd Vice Prez in Texas 2011-12) + awards there, National Latin Exam gold medals. National Young Leaders Conference. Art. Piano. Business Professionals of America (started this year, not on app)[/ul]
Location/Person:[ul] Houston
[] State or Country: Texas
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Hispanic, Black
[li] Gender: Female[/ul]Other Factors, hook?: National Merit, National Hispanic, National Achievement, Female/URMinority Engineer, and USC is pretty big on supporting their LGBT community, which I’d add to.
[/li]

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: Presidential Scholarship Finalist (need to interview), and there’s a NatMerit scholarship but I think it’s the same minus the interview and you can only get one, so I’m a bit confused. I did an interview with Mr. Ledesma and went to a lot of events so I was a familiar face to some of their staff. Probably will go if money allows [back-up colleges offered a lot, and parents get financial say you know!]

**Decision: Accepted **

Date applied: Oct 31st

Date decision postmarked/received: 30th January

Accepted at which school/major at USC: Architecture

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT Total: 2040 M: 650, CR: 690, WR: 700,
[] ACT: N/A
[] SAT Subject Tests: N/A
[] GPA-UW/W: We don’t have GPAs, I take A-Levels… Maths, Further Maths, Physics & Art. I am predicted AAAA respectively.
[] Rank: We don’t rank, but out of our year group of 90 girls, I’d guess I was top 7 maybe.
[]AP/IB classes: N/A
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Commonapp essay basically like a personal statement, and explaining my love for architecture, and talking about my way of thinking. The supplemental essay I thought was witty when I sent half an hour before the deadline, but with hindsight I think was risky, but I guess that’s what they liked! Overall, 9/10
[] Teacher Recs: 10/10 - I have the most incredible, supportive teachers who showed me what they wrote, and all recs made me sound amazing! So I am very very grateful.
[] Counselor Rec: Again, very lucky to have had such a good rec.
[] EC highlights: I made a maths revision guide for GCSE students at my school, I conduct homework study sessions for 2.5 hours every week to help younger students, I am an academic prefect, member of Chamber and Senior Choir, and also Jazz band at my school. [/ul]
Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Jersey, a 9 by 5 mile island off of France, but we are part of the UK
[] School Type: Private all girls school for Sixth Form (Grades 11 &12) Although a Public Secondary co-ed school before that
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female[/ul]Other Factors, hook?: I think geographically I stood out, but I think also my achievements despite extenuating family circumstances pulled me through. I’m not sure, I don’t think on paper I am an incredible candidate whatsoever, but…

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: Just so incredibly grateful to have this opportunity. Finalist for Presidential Scholarship which is just a miracle, although even if I was lucky enough to get that, I’d still need to find £21000 a year :’( Although after reading on here that you can get bumped up to Trustee, I am so excited to go over for the interview, even if the chances of that happening are very low.

Quick question. Is anyone denied during this first round process?

sadiedog, no

@ilovemyego23
Me too (I hope and pray lol)!!!

[] Essays: Hmm… I think it’s decent, I just talked about how I love nature
[] Teacher Recs: No idea, I haven’t been able to see it but I did ask teachers I know fairly well so I think they were okay
[] Counselor Rec: Once again, no idea but I’m pretty sure it was generic
[] EC highlights: Street Photography, Sports (lacrosse, cross country), Conservation work (animal welfare club), MUN, School Newspaper [/ul]
Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: South Korea
[] School Type: Foreign Language School
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female [/ul]Other Factors, hook?: I don’t think I did anything really special… I just really worked hard to show that I’m really passionate about natural conservation.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: It just says I’m a candidate for a full scholarship. I’m not sure which one. All I can say is that I’m flabbergasted, I actually didn’t even know USC offered scholarships haha so it was a huge surprise when I got the mail. I love cali since I used to live near San Jose and I’m just super excited to visit the school for Explore USC!

By chance did you see your USC connect portal prior to getting your acceptance? Were you locked out of some of the boxes? What do the boxes look like now?

Thanks!

Posting for my daughter.

REJECTED

SAT: 2150 (only took once).
GPA: Unweighted: 3.65. Weighted: 4.06
RANK: School doesn’t rank, but in top 10% of class. (ELC at UCs).
APs: Many APs; almost all honors classes. Rigorous program.

Essays, truly excellent. Teacher recs, assume they were fine. ECs, average but based on true passion.

LOCATION: CA
SCHOOL TYPE: Private
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: Female.

Other factors: LEGACY. Also, she attended their four-week summer program during the summer after 10th grade.

COMMENTS: Shocked and saddened. My daughter has wanted to go to 'SC for her whole life and we assumed she’d get in. She is an extremely bright student who is an excellent writer and has a scholarly mind and a passion for learning and ideas. Can’t believe they turned her down.

What the hell is a “Trojan Transfer Plan”?

HardDay, I am so sorry to hear that your daughter didn’t get the news she was hoping for. She sounds like an exceptional student and person, and this sounds like USC’s loss. I wish her well at whatever college is fortunate enough to call her part of their class of 2017. We are bracing ourselves here in the Midwest.
