Location/Person:

State or Country: NJ
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: female
Gender: Asian

Other Factors, hook?:

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: USC is my dream school and I’m crushed. I know my GPA is low but I thought my extracurriculars could compensate, especially the ones aimed towards journalism. I think I will appeal my decision.

We benefitted from these threads last year during the application process, so I’m posting my son’s data:

Decision: Rejected – Dornsife Bio vs Env Science
Date applied: mid-November

SAT M760 CR780 W800 Total 2340
ACT: didn’t take
SAT Subject Tests: Math2: 780 Bio: 800
GPA: 3.5 unweighted (at a fancy-pants competitive nationally ranked private HS)
Rank: doesn’t rank
AP classes: School offers AP’s essentially only for seniors (w occasional exceptions). ?Taking two or three this year

Essays: It always cracks me up how kids note here that they wrote amazing essays. CA essay was very good. USC essays were very USC-specific
Teacher Recs: Prob OK
Counselor Rec: Same
EC: Community Service, some sports, Local Youth Group. Some leadership. Nothing too spectacular
Awards: When he played JV Basketball, he was voted most likely to become a coach!

State or Country: CA
School Type: see above
Ethnicity: Vanilla
Gender: Male

Accepted to Emory, Brandeis (w/ merit money), Tulane (w/ even more merit money)

Thoughts: It’s good that this decision came at the end of the decision cycle. At one point USC was my son’s first choice, but as time went by and some other schools showed him their love it dropped down a bit on the list. Historically (and in some ways surprisingly) USC hasn’t taken a whole lot of kids from his HS and he knew that with his GPA this was a bit of a reach. The rejection would have really hurt a few months ago. Now it resulted in just a slightly bruised ego. He feels like he has some good options. However, I do think he will now root against the Trojan football team. Good luck to all!

Decision: Accepted

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: Half tuition scholarship because of NMF, but anxiously awaiting FA package because I still don’t know if it’ll be enough. Rejected at Duke and Tufts, so now it’s pretty much between USC and UNC Chapel Hill for me. My mom is extremely anxious about me going to school in California and hasn’t even given me the okay to visit yet, let alone attend. But I am very grateful to have been accepted and am really excited! Congrats to everyone accepted and go Trojans!!!

SAT Subject Tests: none
GPA: 3.98/4.27
Rank: 3
AP classes: 2 last year and 3 this year - AP Language and Composition (4) and AP US History (4)

Subjective:
Essays: Not sure, but I had a very unique topic. Probably wasn’t too good, because I didn’t have anyone check it over for spelling/grammar errors. But it did display my passion for my intended major. My supplement about “Why I want to go to USC” was specifically-geared towards the school and really displayed why I wanted to go.
Teacher Recs: I had my Chinese teacher write my common app recommendation (didn’t see)
Counselor Rec: Probably very general (didn’t see)
EC: 3 years of NHS (Vice President), 5 years of Leo Club (officer for all 5 years), Concert Choir (2 years), Select Choir (1 year), 3 years of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Community-based dance group with over 100 members (founder/event coordinator), NSLI-Y (received competitive government-funded scholarship to study abroad last summer), Robotics, Korean Club (event coordinator), and summer school assistant math teacher

School: Small, private
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Other factors/hooks: first-generation college student, low income?

General Comments: Having been rejected from Berkeley (no surprise) and wait-listed at NYU Stern, my USC acceptance came as a complete surprise. I think one of the main reasons I got in is because of my USC supplement — perhaps also my essay? Again, it really displayed my passion for the school and my major. Hope you guys can see that test scores aren’t everything!

Rank: 17/194
AP/IB classes: 8 AP Chem (4), APUSH (4), AP Gov (5), AP Calc AB (5), AP Lang (5), AP Stats, AP Enviro, AP Lit

Subjective:

Essays: Wrote them in a rush but used other polished essays as a template. Thought they turned out pretty strong. Wrote about working at a summer camp and extensively about how I got interested in my major through life experience. Made the calculated decision to call myself whimsical and I think it payed off. I tried to be humorous whenever possible and the 3 words to describe myself were pretty funny. Didn’t take the essays too seriously
Teacher Recs: Both teachers knew me both inside and outside of the classroom and helped me recover from the loss of my father last year, so we have a lot of mutual respect.
Counselor Rec: She loves me more than I think is natural. Helped me with my dad just like the teachers. Knew me throughout the years.
EC highlights: ASB Treasurer, Key Club President and Treasurer, Swim Team Captain, Boy Scout Life Scout and summer camp lifeguard for 2 years, tech crew at local theater for last 3 years, and founder of an unofficial philosophy club

Location/Person:

State or Country: WA
School Type: Small Public (800)

Other Factors, hook?: Dad I was close to passed away unexpectedly last year and I still came away strong in school and life (generally). I have a transgender parent that transitioned when I was in middle school and I was a bit of an advocate. That gave me some diversity I’m sure.

Thoughts: Wasn’t super emotionally invested in being accepted or denied but super stoked now that I am. Not necessarily shocked I was accepted but excited nonetheless. Probably going to end up here.
