Hey guys! I know it's early, but it's never too soon to be prepared! I see so many threads regarding Fall 2014 students who made mistakes because they were too late to finish IGETC, or major prereqs or were too late in making the correct decisions in their Sophomore year at a CCC. So here we are!

So who's getting ready for the next window at UCLA? I'm getting all my ducks lined up myself. I have scheduled out everything to make sure I have my IGETC and major prereqs completed by the end of Spring, 2015. Currently, my problem is finding all the major prereqs at Los Angeles community colleges. So far I'm at two CCC's and also having to do the ITV courses to make sure I can get them all. Anyone else finding it difficult to simply find the courses they need out there?

Tell us where you are in preparation and what problems or questions you have. Hopefully we can all start supporting each other now so there's no snags later this Fall when we start applying for next year. Good luck! :)

Good luck to all Fall 2015 applicants!

Great to have @cayton on board in here, he’s been an invaluable asset to all the 2014 applicants and will hopefully share his wisdom with us newbs. ;)

Cayton, what has been your experience with the lack of major prereqs available at CCC’s? I’ve heard it’s getting even worse with budget cuts. Does UCLA take this in to consideration if you’re missing say, one major prereq? I might be missing one American Lit. & Culture major prereq, but it’s just not being offered at any CCC within 10 miles of me. Thoughts?

@fullload‌

I’ll be glad to help Fall 2015 UCLA applicants in any way I can and in this thread specifically. I’ll stick around for application season this November and next year when decisions come out for you guys.

In regards to major pre-reqs, I’ve found that CCs vary tremendously in what pre-reqs they offer for certain majors. Thankfully, my school, Santa Monica College, is pretty good with having the necessary pre-reqs for majors at UCLA since they have so many students who have transferred and who will transfer(Myself included) to that school.

UCLA definitely does not hold the lack of completion of any pre-req(s) against you if it’s not offered at your community college. As far as I know, I don’t even think they’ll hold it against you if it’s offered at a nearby CC but don’t enroll at that CC to complete it, although you’re certainly free to do so, as many others have.

Since one of the pre-reqs for your major isn’t available at any CC within a 10 mile radius of you, it won’t be held against you. You’ll be fine.

checking in for the ride! I am also getting everything planned out.
I hope eventually I can post important date estimates so people have a general idea.
i.e.: October 1 = Application Open, November 31 = Application Due, etc.

Edit: @Cayton ! I just noticed your pic changed, so happy to see you embracing UCLA!

@fullload‌, I finished everything before I turned in my applications, I did not want any loose-ends. I made sure, my final grades, pre-reqs,IGETC was all completed before I submitted my application. That is the best way to do it, TBH. Because, you see students who post here, who put themselves in difficult situations that can have their admission rescinded. i can not stress enough how important it is to have everything completed, at worse, when you are doing your Fall Application and have courses you are taking your final CC courses that fall. Do not wait till Spring or Summer to have additional classes. Don’t get me wrong, if you are confident enough to believe you can do it, then go for it. I made sure whatever courses that I needed to take, and pass, they were done. I wanted to be in the door when UCLA gave me their stamp of approval.

I too am a student of the LACC system. I had about 51 units completed with LAVC,LAMC&WLAC. Some really fantastic professors. The more units I packed on, the later my registration date became, so I had no choice but to go to Moorpark College.

@cayton That’s a relief, glad to hear I can relax a little about that missing major prereq. It doesn’t mean I won’t obsess over it though, I’m still going to try and find it somewhere. ;)

@luckie1367 Posting deadlines and important dates would be awesome, thanks! We’ll hold you to it. :)

@tik1127 Now that’s what I call prepared! Well done. Unfortunately for me, I started in Spring this year, so I missed all of last Fall. For me it’s all about cramming as many units as I can right now to get them all done by the end of Spring 2015, which if I’m not mistaken is the deadline to be accepted into UCLA for Fall 2015. Hopefully, finishing a couple IGETC and major prereqs in my Spring 2015 semester will still be ok with them. The good news is, I’m holding down a 4.0 right now and will be jumping into the TAP program at my CCC this Summer, just haven’t gotten into the counselor yet, but I do qualify for it.

I’m also a non-trad (I’m old) so I have the luxury of owning a home already and have a savings from my prior career to go to school full-time. This gives me the ability to add every course I can. I’ve listed out every course through Spring 2015 on my own spreadsheet, so everything should be done at the end of that Spring semester, which will be a total of 65 units. That, along with an awesome essay, solid recommendation letters from several profs and extensive EC’s, I should have a great shot at my dream school, UCLA.

Fingers crossed.

Who else is on the Fall 2015 path? Please share your experience thus far and if you’re having any concerns, so we can all share and learn from them. Thanks!

The UC application actually opens this summer for next year’s cycle. So you guys get to spend even more time wondering if you got everything right!

@fullload Letters of recommendations are not necessary for transfer student. What’s your major?

thanks @fullload I know I stay on track when I have a master list of deadlines too look at. Here is the best one I can find, courtesy of ■■■■■■■■■■■■. I’ve put stars next to the more important ones.

Great, thank you @k4201505 . August -> November seems like a really long time to work on an application. Why do you guys think they are doing that?

@oongaboonga Ah, thanks for that tip, I thought rec letters were important to transfers too. Oh well, I have a couple already anyway, guess it couldn’t hurt to add them? As mentioned, I’m a non-trad, so I have more in common with my current profs then most of the kids in class. I 've built some friendships with a couple profs. In fact, I’m going out to have a beer with one next week. ;)

Oh, I’m an English major at CCC but applying for the American Lit. and Culture major at UCLA, which has a much better acceptance rate, over English majors. Also, my goal is getting into the creative writing program and this major is accepted for that program too.

Letters of Rec aren’t needed for admission, but are sometimes needed for scholarships.

@fullload‌

What is your major? And check for Online Courses. LACC has a large variety of internet courses. I enrolled in a few at WLACC and never stepped foot on campus. Here is a list of LACC that offer Internet courses. Maybe you can find it. And I am not sure what the date is on for those, or for what term, it gets updated frequently though. I do not believe Fall is up yet. But give it a look.

Lacolleges.net;

Thanks, @tiki1127 that’s a great link! I’m taking a couple online classes at WLAC too, so I’m definitely aware of them, however I never thought to open up to other LACC online courses, so I will when Fall opens. It’s the English 203-206 classes that are the most tough to find for me, being a lit major. There’s one in particular I find the most elusive. But I’ll keep at it. Good luck guys! :)

Not a problem, I took English 102 online at WestLAC, fairly nice professor. But the problem was, that I wasn’t aware, English 102 at WLACC did not count as a English Communications Course, but a Arts and Humanities. Had to take English M01C at Moorpark College to get my critical thinking out of the way.

IGETC critical thinking prereq is English 103. The major prereq is 102, which is also found in the arts and humanities, as you mentioned. :)

If you need to take English 102 and haven’t yet, Professor Nuala Lincke Ivic(At WLAC) has an English 102 Online course. I got an A in that course. But prepare to read a handful of books, the last one, if she is keeping the same model that she did in previous semesters, will be American God’s. It was a long… Long long, book. I seriously, had to buy the Audible for it, no way would I be able to read all that. That will be for your final, the other books were, Their Eyes Were Watching God,Siddhartha and I believe one more. Really nice professor, and i you try just a little, she will give you the A.

Too funny, I actually have her on my schedule for 102 already. She had a high rating at that professor rating website. What’s even better is I’ve read two of the books you mentioned, so hopefully she keeps those. Thanks for the insight!
