Why is the U drastically cutting down their class sizes? I see that last years graduating class had almost 12000 students and the freshman class last fall only had 5200.
@dancermom79 CLA lets in a whole lot of students via transfer. So the graduating class size is larger than the entering. Can’t speak for the other colleges but perhaps the same thing is going on there too for a couple of them.
Also @dancermom79 there were 5,880 enrolled as freshmen for fall 2016, according to their institutional stats (add up the numbers for the TC campus):

My son applied around September and was accepted into CLA Honors.
3.91 GPA
Dual enrolled
34 ACT
4 AP
We are WI residents so we get in state tuition. Do you think there will be a Merit scholarship offered or is the in state tuition the best we could hope for?
I’m sure he’ll get in. I know of people with much lower stats than him (24, 25 ACTs) that have gotten into CLA this year. I have lower stats than your son (30 ACT, 3.7 GPA) and got in. Appealing the decision is always an option if he really wants to go there.
I really want to hear about CSE Honors! has anyone gotten anything yet?
@blountwil2 I have seen a few people post that they got into CSE Honors. They seemed to all have 34-36 ACT Scores. I’m still waiting for my daughter; she is CBS with a 33 ACT. Hoping she gets into Honors as well.
My son has 34 ACT, he has not received notice on CSE Honors. We have been told can take until early March
If you go on the theory that top 10% of each college is eligible for honors, that makes the decision for CSE/CBS especially tough because there are so many at the very top of the GPA and ACT ranks.
@uofmmom I have a 35 ACT and am a National Merit Scholar so I hope that would be enough! UMNTC is very close to my first choice and honors would solidify that
@blountwil2 Then I am sure you will get into Honors. I don’t know why some people are notified earlier than others when their stats are the same. Good Luck!
I have not seen one CSE Honors…if you can point to the post that would be great…still waiting to hear.
I have definitely seen a couple of people post on this (or a related) thread that they were admitted to CSE honors, even back in the fall, but it was really just one or two people, IIRC.
We’ve been waiting for months to hear about S17 (he was admitted to CSE in late Oct., and has 4.0 UW GPA with rigorous schedule and 35 ACT, received generous scholarship $ shortly after being admitted, but no word re: honors). I finally gave in and called admissions two days ago just to ask if he was even still in the running and was told he was accepted to honors and that he’d probably hear something by the end of this week (still waiting for that to happen; application tracker still hasn’t changed but I’m hoping maybe it will tomorrow). I’m waiting until I see it in writing before I tell him, though.
Page 5 of the Admissions thread has a couple of CSE honors posts.
@262mom those stats sound exactly like mine and the dates are very similar. It would be amazing if we could hear this week and quit the waiting.
@blountwil2 good luck! I hope we all get good news re: honors soon! (Still nothing in writing or on the app tracker here…)
S17’s application tracker changed late this afternoon. Now includes honors invitation!
@262mom instate or OOS? Wondering if they just haven’t gotten to my review or OOS?
D was accepted into CSE Honors (early action). We visited but I’m afraid we didn’t get the flavor of the school. I’d really appreciate it if you could say what you like and don’t like about the school.
What we liked: the head of the new head of the honors program is wonderful and the program has real depth (not simply a different dorm and early registration to classes) in that it not only offers honors sections of classes but also keeps the kids involved in the world outside of college. The engineering library is stunningly beautiful and the people were definitely Minnesota nice. It was also very easy to get to the airport.
The downside: the campus seemed to shut down at 6 but we were there in the winter.
Any impressions/experience would be so helpful. It is a very difficult decision we all need to make. Thanks!
@Building, Walter Library IS stunning. I read that it was the main library for the original campus which explains the interior. The mall is super cool and very “university-looking”; however, you are correct that the campus does seem to clear out - on Fridays or weekends or Thanksgiving, etc. There are plenty of kids studying in the libraries or in the restaurants along Washington Ave. or Dinkytown so they’re around (though a lot also probably go home for the weekend). Probably in the dining halls too. It could be that since UMN is in a major city, there’s a lot to do OFF campus.
The honors program seems to have a lot to offer but my daughter and I will learn more during one the Honors Showcases in a week or so. She’ll also get a chance to tour Middlebrook and the Honors residential community. I do have a friend whose daughter graduated summa from UMN-CSE and they couldn’t be happier with the qualify of her education and the honors program. She had been accepted at a pretty elite private but due to finances they opted for a local public education and don’t regret it at all (her mom is an alum of a HYPS so they have pretty strict standards).
Once we attend the Honors Showcase I’ll be happy to update the thread about what the Honors Program entails.
