Are you able to get in-state tuition at ASU, given that you moved to AZ in senior year? For many states you have to be a resident at least a year before matriculating.

Why are you interested in UMN rather than ASU?

@JBStillFlying I will pm you :slight_smile:

Anyone in Engineering hear about Honors program yet? I see others but not Engineering. Was wondering when I might know or ask?

@Seacoast Well I was accepted to engineering (CSE) just a couple of days ago so I am not expecting to hear about Honors until some time later. When did you receive your acceptance letter?

Hi I got my letter about a week before Christmas - the one in the mail.

So it’s safe to say all the non priority applications turned in before Dec 15 will begin to come out after Jan 31

Applied to College of Biological Sciences, admitted into Honors program
ACT: 34
GPA: 3.98
Rank: 7/278? something like that
MN resident
ECs: Varsity XC/Track, Math League, NHS, Key Club, dressage riding, ~300 volunteer hours, stuff

@dancermom79 Has your daughter heard anything yet? We are still waiting…

My daughter’s portal has now changed to “being carefully considered”

My son applied August 1 for CSE. He JUST got accepted yesterday.

@Momlettinggo17 She was accepted to her second choice program on Friday. Good luck

D was wait-listed for CBS. She didn’t apply to a second choice college at MN - she went for CBS or bust! Wisconsin resident, 29 ACT, 4.0 GPA, AP & College courses.
Does anyone know if there’s anything she can do to improve her chances of getting off the wait list? For instance, she just got her HS fall 2016 semester grades - all A’s, including a 98 in Physics, and I know CBS requires Physics. Is it worth trying to send a new transcript with this info. or will they even look at it at this point?

Here is what the admissions page says about being waitlisted (very recent info based on the date):

"Fall 2017 Waitlist Information

January 27, 2017: Thank you for applying to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for fall 2017. We have completed a very careful, individual review of your application. Based on an overall assessment of your application, including your coursework, grades, standardized test scores, and the additional information you provided, we find that we must place your application on a waitlist.

Admission to the University of Minnesota is highly competitive. For example, for fall 2016 admission, we received more than 49,000 applications for a freshman class of approximately 5,700 students. While we are very grateful for the strong interest in the University of Minnesota, the number of applications submitted and the strength of the applicant pool have created a competitive admissions situation.

Please know that when we make admission decisions, we are not trying to keep applicants out of the University. Rather, we must ensure that the number of new freshmen is reasonably in line with the resources and services designed to support student success (e.g., course availability, academic advising, and campus housing).

If space becomes available in the freshman class, we will automatically re-review your application and consider you for admission. The number of students who will be offered admission from the waitlist will be based on the number of admitted students who confirm their enrollment. Over the coming weeks we will continue to closely monitor the number of admitted students who confirm their enrollment, and if space becomes available we will admit the overall strongest applicants who remain on the waitlist. Students who are selected for admission will receive an update by email no later than April 15, 2017.

We sincerely appreciate your interest in the University of Minnesota. Additional information and frequently asked questions are listed below."

I would definitely get in touch with the admissions counselor to express continued interest and arrange to have updated transcripts and any new achievements, honors, etc. sent in. Given that they re-review the file, the updated information can help your case. Also, not sure about this but it may also bump you ahead of other, weaker, candidates. The big “IF” is whether they chose their admits to reflect a higher yield than historically (about 27-29%). If they did so, there might be precious few spots that open up. That’s why you want the application to be as strong as possible.

CBS and CSE have become VERY competitive of late. Someone who is admitted off the waitlist is as much an admit as someone accepted in first round decisions. Good luck to her!

With a ACT 33 composite score, new SAT 1450, 3.45 UW GPA, AP Physics, AP Calc, AP Bio, Chem Honors, a bunch of ECs, solid letters of recommendation and a clean disciplinary record from his competitive private prep school, son was waitlisted. Kind of shocked.

@Hisunshine - did he apply to CSE? And was he a MN resident or OOS?

my app status changed to:

“Your application is being very carefully considered. All of your required application materials have been received by the Office of Admissions and your application is being very carefully considered. Decisions are made based on a holistic review of each individual application, and will be sent to students on a rolling basis. Our decision timeline information is available here.” I applied priority deadline and was supposed to get my decision by Jan 31 (tomorrow), does this mean i am waitlisted?

We are OOS (Hawaii,) applied to CLA, mom is alumna and sister attends. Did not request and do not need financial aid.

@Hisunshine I’m so sorry and kind of shocked as well! My older daughter had similar stats a few years ago and was accepted, but we are in-state. CLA must have become a lot more difficult to get into this year. :frowning:
