@SWS1965 Congrats on all your acceptances. You definitely did a great job of applying to a wide variety of colleges. I won’t be going to CSUF, so hopefully, my spot goes to you or somebody who is willing to attend. Btw, I love Laguna Niguel. I always went to Newport Beach last year and I absolutely love the people, the weather, and the atmosphere.
What are your top choices at the moment? SJSU is not bad. It was my first choice until UCR accepted me. Also, what’s your CSU GPA and SAT/ACT?
I had rough time in 10th grade got Mononucleosis and it affected my grades but 6th and 7th semester 3.86 GPA i speak three languages English, Mandarin and Spanish GPA is 3.38 ACT25
so that’s why I think I got axed on some of these colleges.
@Yujio12 Some people just put the first letter of their first name in the middle name section and the application went through. I never listed my middle name on my college apps, but I just put the first initial of it and my waitlist app went through.
3.97 GPA
13 Honor’s and AP classes
1300 SAT
4 on Calculus AP Exams
Accepted Honor’s College in January
Waitlist for Computer Science this week. Horrible admissions process.
Applied to nine public colleges in California for CS and was not accepted to any.
Public colleges in California are giving the slots away to out of state and international students for more $$$.
Check UC’s site to see that 35% of spots are being given to out of state and international students for $$$ http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/davis/freshman-profile/index.html
California Residents (% of admits)
64.2%
As residents of California we pay taxes and receive no educational benefits. Non taxpayers are receiving the educational benefits residents should be receiving.
There should at least be an option for residents to pay full board.
Assume CA schools have so many applicants they don’t have to give a rip.
@thurl, did you get in to the school, just not into the major? I don’t understand.
I’m guessing you didn’t apply to some of the so-called lower-tier publics? Don’t some of them also have CS or no? Some of them are still accepting applications.
Finally, what do you mean by an option for residents to pay full board? Do you mean for residents to pay as much as OOS and International students, so they don’t have to go after that money? Oh, I should add, I also imagine they admit OOS and International students to add to diversity. Going to school with only California residents might not sufficiently broaden students’ horizons?
Diversity is the excuse, it appears to be all about $$$ to me.
6 UCs and 3 CSUs applied to. Do we need to be admitting 35% from out of state and international?
UC Irvine
UC Santa Cruz
UC Santa Barbara
UC Davis
UCLA
UCSD
CSU Pomona
CSU Sac State
CSU SLO
Were this many out of state students being admitted when there was adequate funding for public schools? $$$
We pay taxes so non-residents can utilize our education system.
Yeah, @Thurll, sucks. The link you posted was about Davis enrollment. Some of the schools are not as bad, but UCLA is even worse! It does suck. Seems it’s largely about certain majors being impacted, because people with lower stats than you got into some of those schools. You’d think with all the OOS money they could expand the resources in some of those impacted majors. The system is whack all-around. I can’t believe people have to declare majors as Freshman, and if they go in undecided they may not get into their choice of major even if they meet standards. Makes no sense to me.
@Thurl you are saying you did not get into Sac state either? Is that your local CSU? I would call admissions to see if there is some error on your application, because it does not make sense.
You should be offered a spot at UC Merced, but should have also included UCR and UCSC to your list. Do you have any other options?
So, out of state residents are being admitted for their $$$. Meanwhile the state takes our tax dollars and places CA residents on waitlists. Did apply to UCSC. Why is Pomona admitting students to Honor’s College and not admitting them to the University? There is a plethora of CA students available so no need to treat it’s students decently.
@Thurll: I agree with your statements and I find it odd that were admitted to the Honors College but not admitted to the university. I do no that the Honor’s college admission is separate from the Universities admission process, but again I find it strange that you were not admitted to several of the schools on your list. I would definitely call the admissions office to see if there is some mistake and then consider appealing.
Long story short, @thurl is correct. OOS tuition is 3 times in state. Money is the reason the UCs have done this, though they couch it in other terms. In 2009, 95% of UC freshmen were in-state. Currently, that is only true at Merced. Overall, 2015 incoming UC all-campus freshman class was 79% in-state. That’s about 5,000 slots (of 33,000 total) given to OOS and international students. Diversity, yes, but let’s take care of our own first.
BTW, usually rejection from the major means rejection form the university. And unfortunately, it does not help much to get into the school but not the major. CS is now nearly impenetrable from inside or outside of the universities for the vast majority of kids. It’s not as impacted in other states, but California (tech capital of the world) did not prepare. We parents of aspiring CS majors are pretty upset, as you can tell.
Sorry for the double post, @Thurll is the member I should have tagged above.
And yes, the “big” UC campuses are giving away 1/3 or more of freshman spots to OOS and international applicants. The cap per the article referenced by @GumbyMom is sort of good news, but for this year’s senior class, too little and too late. Tricky that the UCs proposed an overall cap of 20%, which is very close to what they are doing now to the detriment of our kids. It is the freshman admissions that are the problem and that number is about 35% at the most desirable campuses.
Back on topic, CPP rejected a lot of qualified California kids this year because of the trickle-down effect from the UC debacle.
Got waitlisted for Cal Poly Pomona but I got accepted by cal state fullerton and cal state la for computer science which college is better for compuer science?
GPA: 3.63
Major-related GPA (Math, Physics, CS classes): 3.8
All major requirements: Completed, went above and beyond (Calc I - III, Linear Algebra, Diff Eqns)
IGETC: Completed
Thought I would definitely get in… looks like I’m going to UCI (accepted CS) or maybe UCSD (decision pending).
@Yujio12: CPP does not consider an applicants level of interest according to the CDS so if you opted into the waitlist, they know you are serious applicant.
